Hi all,

This is my first post here so I'm hoping its in the right place.

I have just acquired 2 new piggies from a local lady. They are 10 weeks old. I have had pigs before, although not for a couple of years as the grieving process has taken a long time since our last one passed away.

I have 2x Amazon basics C&C, correx sheets and fleece fabric. I have found some old towelling. I am new to this type of setup but have the opportunity to create palatial piggy living quarters so want to get it right!

I plan to make them a set up that is 7x3 with a loft that will be 2x3 at one end.

I have looked through all the threads on building but have a couple of questions.

Do I need to have edges to my correx, the premade trays I have seen have a sort of lip running all around, is that necessary or is that just for loose bedding and come as standard so to speak?

If the "lip" is necessary does my liner have to wrap over the top or can I just make it to the size of the bottom of the tray?

Do I need a waterproof bottom layer beneath fleece and towelling or would that be unnecessary?

Thank you in advance

The Edges to the correx is not necessary, it will just keep loose bedding inside but if you’re not using a disposable bedding, then it doesn’t matter.

You need an absorbent layer under the fleece - mattress protector, puppy pads of such like - as it will wick the urine through the fleece and to the absorbent layer. Towels can be used underneath fleece but there is a risk that they just won’t dry quickly enough which will mean the fleece is always damp

Wow! 7x3 C&C is a big space. Your piggies are so lucky having you as a new piggy parent! 👏

If I've understood what you mean and you're asking if you can do without the sides of Correx, I guess you could but hay & poo would get flicked through the grids all the time onto the floor around.

You don’t need the lip but it stops poos and hay being flicked out.

I have a constant battle with my pigs whose sole purpose in life is to get underneath the fleece. So I have to have it up the lip and attached in multiple places to stop them trying to bury themselves. They seem to think lying under the absorbent layers in puddles of wee is some sort of piggy dream.

Such speedy replies!

Its sounds as though sides are a good idea, I hadn't though about poo-flicking. I will build sides, what would be a good height for them?

I don't know yet whether they will like to bury under the fleece, in which case fleece sides can't be a bad thing, my sewing machine won't know what's hit it!

I'll have a look into something other than the towelling, thanks for the explanation, soggy wee patches is gross!

Thanks again, I'll post pictures when I can but they are both currently hiding in a massive pile of hay so they can gradually adjust to our sounds and smells etc, photoshoots would be unfair at this stage!

I shouldn’t laugh but my girls (I’m mainly looking at you Chanel!) like to burrow. So I sewed the waterproof layer to the fleece and clip the excess sides to the lip of the correx. If you’re lucky they don’t. For now you can see if they’re burrowing in their current housing then decide. My boys have just a liner that sits on the bottom.
