Hello ladies.

I am after some advice/suggestions please.

I have 2 guinea pigs that are in a ferplast 100( yes i now know it is too small for them) i am looking to makea cage out of theC&C cubes. I am hoping to get them this weekend from screwfix :(|)

I have 2 questions
1st they are in the living room as that is the only place where there is space and they are happy in there. The problem i have is that we have a dog who loves the piggies a lot and they love him so long as there is a barrier between them. Would it be easy to make a lid for the cage with the grids? if so how would it be fitted as i would access into it everyday.
2nd my piggies like to 'kick' poo out of their cage. My husband is moaning that they will kick all their poo out, what can be done to stop it?
3rd my husband is not too sure of this as he thinks wont be very sturdy and wants to think of something else, does anyone have any suggstions? He has suggested a dog crate would that do?

Sorry for the long post.

Amanda,

hello we have a lid on ours, but it is not very strong, and if your dog decided he wanted to get in the cage, then i think that might be possible, at least the way we made ours, others might help you more with this idea. secondly, when you put the correx in a c& c cage, which is the flooring, you make it so that it is bigger than the floor space of the cage, then fold it all the way up the sides, inside the grids, so the frame sits outside the flooring if that makes sense, then all the mess is contained in the cage. hope this helps x

Cage

Hey amanda! I had reservations as to how my C&C cage would work for me too. hopefully i can help you. :)
My piggies have to be in the same room as my dog when we stay with my grandparents, I would suggest that us use cable ties as hinges, so that the lid is connected securely over most of the area, (say your cage was 2x4) four alone the one long side would be fixed, the 4 alone the other side would be connected to the secure 4 buy cable ties, and secured to the other side (when closed) with bulldog clips, that way when you want to open it you can just remove the bull dog clips. :) Hope that made sense :S
On the other hand you could buy a large table to put the cage on, then it wouldnt need a lid and you could store piggy stuff underneath

When you line the cage, whether you choose to use coroplast or lino, give it a lip, so it goes about 7 inches up the sides, this should stop too much poo kicking. *i must say, when i had my boys on sawdust they used to kick things out all the time, since ive changed to fleece i dont have this problem, might be worth considering as it is more cost effective, however is also more time consuming*

I find i to be easily as sturdy as a shop bought cage. As long and you dont want to be lifting it up all the time it is not a problem. My dog could never get into mine. :) The main problem i found when looking into dog cages as an alternative, was that the gaps between the bars were too big, and you still have the problem of 1. lining it so poo doesnt get kicked out, and 2. it would be very awkward to acess and due to the height of the large cages would take up and seemingly HUGE amount of upward space.

I hope that was helpful. :D

I have a lid on my cage too made out of the grids attached with cable ties and it opens easy enough..... but I have 2 dogs and wouldnt trust them .... they would probably be fine but I wouldnt personally trust any dog and I keep my piggies where the dogs cant go.... they used to be in rooms the dogs could go into but were in commercial cages then.

Like you, when I first got 3 of my piggies they had a temporary cage which was too small but they were small and they had lots of 'run' time until I could sort them out in a better setup - I was moving house at the time so commercial/easy to move cages made more sense temporarily.

I've never regretted doing a C&C cage though for space and flexibility. I wonder if making a wood frame or something for it you could strengthen it for more protection from your dog ?

As liquorice allsorts has said the correx stops the poop mess :))

Have a look at some of the cage pictures on the forum and see if any give you inspiration,

xx
