i am researching making c&c cages rather than buy bigger store brought cages as it will be better for them and cheaper as for just my 4 boars in their 2 pairs it would be 2 x 150cm cages at £110 each, so am planning to make a 2 tiered c&c for them so i can house them at the other end of the room to my girls
i then have 2 castrated males who both live with 1 female
and 3 female pairs so would like to add more girls to my boy/girl pairs to make 2 herds, so hoping for 2 groups of 5 depending on one pair if they will go with the others ok as they can be a bit funny if not it would be 2 groups of 4
i have checked online at guineapigcages for the right c&c cage sizes
but they only go up to 4 pigs which is 2x6
so for 5 pigs I'm guessing a 2x7 c&c cage? as they seem to go up 1 grid size for an extra pig
the space i have will fit 6 and half grids in length so rather 2x7 i would have a 3x6 would that be the same size for 5 pigs?
the only trouble is finding correx for this size or would i need more than one sheet for cage? if so how would i do that?
thanks

I cant help with the sizing, but i would say that making it out of 2 pices is easy, you just tape them up down the middle same as you tape up the corners :)

Since you have space for the 3x6, it would be better than a 2x7 since it's wider. With more pigs, wider cages are better for giving them space to get around.

I'm not sure what size coroplast you can find there. The standard size in USA is 4x8 ft. (48 x 96 inches), which is enough for a 3x6 cage if you make the sides 3.5 inches tall. A 3x6 is about 41 x 84 inches, with 3.5 inches for all the wall, it comes up to 48 x 91 inches.

excellent thank you both, thats very helpfull and just what i needed to know :)

just wanted to say that both my pens are made up with two sheets of correx, but with an overlap that is quite large incase of leakage, but I havent taped it down as the idea was to be able to pull the top (and furthest away) section closer to me, clean it up, redress it with paper, towels and fleece, then slide it back into position and dress up the other section (which I had removed and swept out before moving the other piece.

I have used this set up in the boys 5x2 c&c and it really does work, cleaning out completely takes no time at all, I can reach the far section to poop scoop but to give it a good clean I thought it was better to be able to bring it towards me, especially for when the herd come in and I wont be able to stand on the bed, as there pen is situated where I would stand.

I learnt this from last winters time with the girls in the 6ftx4ft pen (now a 5x3 c&c with a 2x3 top level), as it got very awkward having to reach right over to get to the nooks and crannys, I also didnt put correx sides up, this time I have the sides as it makes such a difference keeping everything inside the pen and not on the floor, and making things neat and tidy, plus I can peg the fleece to the sides and brush away much easier than it loose.

That sounds like a great idea Pepperdog. I'm planning to have a hay area in my new cage, that is like a seperate corex tray thats removeable. Youve given me loads to think about, thankyou!

right so have decided on a 2 tier
7.5 by 3 for my group of 5
and 2nd tier for my group of 3
with a roof

and a 3 tier
3x4 for my each for my 2 pairs of boys and the bottom level for my girl pair as they have refused to get on with my group of 3 so they will need to go with the boys thats if i can manage a 3 tier

trying to work out how many grids and connectors i would need
for them
2 tier 7.5X3 with roof
3 tier 3X4 with roof
plus what size correx would i need for each level?
thanks again

are you talking in foot? - sounds like really bad english, apologies :))

When I worked out the boys pen I worked it out in cm and in inches, then converted back to grids.

If each grid measures 36cm x 36 cm (approx 14")

A 4 grid length will be 4x36=144 or 56"

if you are doing a 7.5' length, that would be 12 (a foot) x 7.5 (the amount of feet needed)/14" (the size of each grid)=6.5 grids

I think :{

sorry i should have explained it will be 7and half grids by 3, as room wont allow 8 grids so i thought rather than have 7 grids and a space i thought to add another grid to make it half a one

I'm not sure on the grids etc, but wanted to say if the bottom level is on the floor it may be easier to use lino instead of correx.
