Hey hoping someone can help me out! We’ve had our boy Blathers for a week now and it feels so good to have piggies back in the house! No stranger to piggies here (he’s our 16th in 10 years) or C&C cages. But, I am new to pigs and cats. Since we lost our last 2 girls last year we have adopted 3 cats (yes we run a zoo lol). My husband was dead set against another C&C cage because A) he hates the fleece we use with it and b) the cats. So I ordered 3 Midwest cages because we’re hoping to date blathers with another boar through a rescue within the next few months. I have had the Midwest cages in my early piggy days before I met my husband and they weren’t my favorite so I’ve been working on convincing my husband to allow me another C&C. He has said yes IF I can figure out a way to have a secure but functional lid to keep the cats out and we use traditional bedding. I’ve agreed to traditional bedding because I honestly prefer it as well but have a question. How would I keel the pigs from chewing on the coroplast since it would be exposed? Also a functional cat proof lid I need help with. It also can’t look bad, that’s another one of his requirements since the pig cage is in the main living room where we have all our guests.

You can build a lid from the grids themselves. Cable tie them to one side so that you can just lift it. I’d say have a look at the thread of people’s c&c setups in the housing section.

As for not chewing, you can use sliders that hold papers together. Let me find an example and post the link here.

They’re called slide binders. Robot Check

I’ve been all over the place with the new cage. I first ordered the Ferplast Krolik 160, but then decided I wanted more space especially if we’re having 2 boys. So I canceled that order. Then I’ve ordered 3 Midwest cages and they will be here tomorrow, I’ll probably donate them to a local small animal rescue. And now I’m onto a C&C cage. I’m a tad indecisive lol

My concern with just cable ties is our cats are quite interested in Blathers and although we are working on teaching them to stay away they get on top of his cage. I’m afraid just cable ties won’t be able to hold their weight.

It happens. I bought one which was too small. Then bought another and put them up against each other. Then they moved into a c&c. One of the other cages did come in handy when I had the girls from school one weekend.

Lids are entirely acceptable on c&c. On my previous set up (mine has been through so many changes it’s ridiculous!), I had a lid
Not all piggies chew on coroplast - mine haven’t - up you can cover it as suggested with binders
The ferplast Krolik is an acceptable sized cage for two boars but the more space you can give the better!

We are planning on keeping this measly trash cage he came with as a vet transport cage because it’s great for that. I just want what’s best for my boy so we’ve been through all the options lol!

Good idea. You don’t have to buy a carrier then 😁👍🏾

So this is kind of what I want to do. Does anyone know what the bar thing in the middle of the lid between the grids is called? My husband thinks that looks acceptable.

It looks like it acts as a hinge between the front and back panels so that’s something I’m interested in but don’t know what it’s called!

They are just called support bars here. Not helpful I know!
Actually, I’ve just seen which bit you mean! Ignore me!

When I’ve had a lid on my c&c in the past, it didn’t flip up like that at all.
It had the whole of the back row of lid grids completely fixed to the sides. And then the front row of grids (which was a series of grids overlapped), tied together with cable ties which acted as a hinge

Oh yeah the bar that goes across the cage from front to back I don’t know what that is either lol. It’s definitely not called a support bar here, I just tried typing it in on google and got a bunch of weird looking car poles and tub support lol. It’s the hinge part on the actual lid I’m curious about!

Also let’s talk stands while we’re here! My husband wants a stand, okay great we’ve had one in the past no problem. Except he wants the stand 2 grids high because he doesn’t like bending over. Is this possible? Is it safe? I’m not sure how to configure the cubes with the connectors to make it 2 high. Sorry for all the questions, the man of the house is making this no easy task for me!

yes a stand with two grids high is possible.
It would mean the entire cage set up would be approximately 112cm high in total

It would be safe (cable tied grids together, ensuring enough grids for support on the floor etc) as it is possible to stack cages up so it is a common practice (one cage on the floor, then a row of grids all the way round, then another separate cage on top, so three grids high in total. You can even add lofts to stacked cages, so they sit even higher)

Google it all - you will find examples

Oh I’m googling away as we speak, I just thought asking here would also be a good option.

So for anyone wondering in the US who comes across this thread.
The bar is not called a support bar here, they are closet rods!

I used those support bars when I had just the boys. I think one was underneath the loft. And I also used them when I moved the girls downstairs of them. I then changed it up to two wooden lengths to act as support for the upper level - it’s all open on one side.
