Hi,I'm going to try and convince my mum to let me keep my two guinea pigs indoors in my room,I am going to ask for a trial run what cage would you suggest for this(cheap, but not too small that it's smelly because that won't help convince her) If I'm allowed them in my room I'm hoping to get a 6 x 2 c&c cage. I have VERY noisy cockatiels in my room would this stress the guinea pigs out? Also what would you suggest to keep the odour to a minimum? Sorry for the long post. Thanks for any replies.

Nice to see you're interested in getting guinea pigs!

Cage

Any cage is fine as long as it meets the standard for the amount of guinea pigs you are getting. A 2x4 is fine for two guinea pigs, especially female ones. 2x5 is good for three females/two males. 7.5 square feet is good for 1-2 guinea pigs but 8-10.5 sq feet is the best for 2. 2x6 is more than enough space which will be great for your pigs! Trixie and Ferplast are good commercial cages, but there's different sizes and you must pay attention to that. A rabbit cage is also good as long as it meets the 120cm x 60cm mininum. Guinea pig cages are usually below the standard and aren't good.

C&C cages are cheaper than commercial cages and honestly feel a lot more open. It's what a lot of the members here use but do not feel as if you have to get a C&C cage but if you are able to make a 2x6 cage that is amazing and it'd be hard for a commercial cage to live up to that size and for that price.

Cockatiels
It may stress out your guinea pig when they first get to your home and moving them would be the best option but I'm sure your guinea pigs will get used to them soon enough, just as long as the chirping isn't 24/7 as that'd annoy anyone. Guinea pigs are actually best placed where a lot of human traffic is and sound is so they get used to humans and the sounds we make.

Odour
I use a 2x4 C&C cage with fleece bedding and change it every 7 days. I have one guinea pig as of now. Usually the cage can last 10 days before it begins to smell and if you can leave your bedroom door open then the smell should air out instead of being trapped in a room. Combat smell by doing spot cleans daily and changing fleece whenever a smell begins to emerge. I do not know of any safe and magical products that'll get rid of smell and mind you the smell of hay isn't for everyone.

Sorry I phrased that badly,I already have two female guinea pigs at the minute they're in a 6 x 8 shed all to themselves but I want them indoors if I can convince my mum. I want a 6 x 2 c&c cage if I re-arrange some furniture. I have to put it on a stand as my rabbit free ranges 24/7. I can't leave doors or windows open because the cockatiels are always out of their cage and the rabbit would get out the door. Does fleece smell? It doesn't bother me I just want to convince my parents to let me keep them in my room. Unfortunately my bedroom is the only room that I might be allowed to keep them in.

We change ours every 2 to 3 days, we have 5 cages in total and clean them as and when it's needed :) Spot cleaned twice a day. The last time I noticed any smell was from the boys in the living room but that was when they needed it cleaning.

I know they're not smelly, but my parents think Guinea pigs are smelly when kept indoors which I disagree with but I want to convince them to let me. Do you make cage liners or put fleece on top of an absorbent material?

I want to ask for a trial run of keeping the guinea pigs in my room for two weeks to prove they're not smelly. What cage size would I need for two weeks? I just want to prove that they're not smelly and If I'm allowed to keep them indoors I will be upgrading the cage anyway so I don't want to pay a lot of money for a cage for two weeks. Any suggestions?

i have mine indoors in a c&c cage.. i use fleece, it gets spot cleaned twice a day ( sometimes in-between if i spot a pile of poo ) and i do a full clean every Sunday & Wednesday.. I hardly notice any smells apart from the hay lol ! Good luck... won't the birds land in the cage though if they have free range?

The birds are usually ok,I don't think they would,if they do I will get a lid. My concern with them is the noise stressing the Guinea pigs out,it is extremely loud and high pitched.
