Hi,
I plan on making a C&C cage but someone said to me that the loft in a C&C cage doesn't add to the overall size of the cage e.g. a 2x3 cage with a 2x2 loft wouldn't equal 5x2 (This isn't my cage size btw!). I was wondering if anyone could tell me why this is?
Many thanks! <3

Guinea pigs are not climbers and many will not use ramps. Floor space is all that counts when giving them space. The minimum size for two would be 2 by 4 but I would make it much bigger myself.

After I put on a tunnel on my ramp all my piggies started using it, and they now use the loft as much as the bottom, you could try the same if you find them not wanting to climb :)

A 2x3 plus a 2x2 loft doesn't equal a 5x2 only in the sense of a piggy wanting to run the full lenth of a 5x2. As for usable floor space it I believe it is equal. All my paired piggies live in a 3x2 plus a 1x2 hay loft. This allows for the two piggies to be able to 'go to another room' like us humans need to do. So in that sense it actually equals more 'humane' space. All the piggies have 2 or more hours a day floor time. The pictures below show what I mean and are just about to be cleaned out on a three day cleaning cycle, The poos in the pens are one nights worth, which are normally picked out twice a day.

Is that a little bit of carpet you have on the ramps? Great idea! I wrap a towel around mine and hold it in place with hair clips.

Thank you everyone, this really helped. That's a great setup you've got going there, Dindypig!

Yes, I have stapled some coarse carpet to the ramps and some hardboard bannisters.

Thanks, the pigs seam to like it and that's what matters.
