Hello lovely people

I am in the process of making a C&C cage for my two piggies so they can come inside over winter and would be really grateful if those of you who have built these before can tell me if I have got it right!

On the bottom of the grids (where they sit on the floor) the connectors sit partially inside the cage like this

I can't see any other way of connecting the bottom together to make it sturdy. If this is right do I measure the correx so it comes up to the connectors but does not sit on top of them, otherwise it wont sit flat on the floor? :{

I have built a 2x4 cage and have put a top level on with the left over grids. This is 2x2 I have tried to photograph it but it isn't easy with see through grids

I was thinking of using two of the grids to make a ramp but OH reckons the upper level has to be 2 grids wide by 2 long to make sure the piggies don't fall out or try to climb round the edges etc

Any help appreciated as I have never made one of these before :)

yes that is how we did ours, and then that whole fame goes over the correx, so the sides of the correx are inside that frame.

Thank you

So the correx does sit on top if the connectors then? Does the base sit fairly flat on the floor, looking at it it seems it might wobble about a bit?

I just wish the pack I bought had more grids in as I don't have enough to make a ramp now :))

yep the correx sits on the connectors :) its fine :)

you can buy ramps, or build one with wood :) just remember not to steep

Thank you :)

We've got one bit of correx so I want to make sure we cut it right the first time!

I will have to see what we have tucked away in the garage to make a ramp. They are used to the ramp in their hutch so if I make something at a similar angle I am sure they will be fine.

yes it does, but because of the connectors, it does nt go directly on the floor, hope this makes sense, we made a ramp out of a piece of mdf, covered in little sticks, lengthwise(got these at a garden centre on a roll, for garden edging) but for us this did nt work, as we felt it was too steep, and when one pig was going up and another comig down, one was nearly pushed off, and it worried me one would get hurt, i have seen people put sides on them though x picture of my cage is on c&c cages on here x

I've got an old ramp tunnel from cosy cavies so I might see if I can attach this to a ramp with velcro.

I only took it out of the hutch because they used to hide in it when they were babies and I could never get them out rolleyes

sounds like a good plan to me x we ended up with no upstairs anyway, when ours decided to fall out, so built a second story for others to live in instead

I can always take the top level off if it doesn't work - one of the advantages of using grids :)

Looks great to me, we also use tie wraps to help reinforce the structure, but maybe not put these on until you have got your design exactly as you want it xx

phew this is a bit of light relief after other posts!!!

Ha ha! I know its all got a bit heated so I am not reading them anymore!

Thanks for the advice about the cable ties. Our cubes came with some small black clips as well as the connectors so we have used some of these around the top where we ran out of connectors, they hold the cubes in place quite well but can easily be taken off unlike cable ties so we will see how well it all holds together.

Next job is getting the OH to cut the correx - Pass the wine someone :))

By the way Liqourice allsorts I love your piggy in your avatar picture

The only place i really felt the need to use cable ties was to reinforce the top floor, but i am a worrier!

I think I will use cable ties on the top floor as well. It seems fairly sturdy but I would worry about a grid popping out a connector!

I use cable ties on all of my cage which is a two level 2x4 witha 2x1 kitchen extension on the top level

4piggiepigs - do you find the 2x1 extension is safe and ok for your piggies.

I have never had a C&C cage and I initially built it with the 2x1 second level, however I worry they might try to step out onto the top of the grids from the 2nd level. Also I am not sure if they'd be ok going up and down the ramp with a 2X1 extension.
Thanks

Hey there! I have a 1x2 extention, here is a picture, (I'm sorry, I'm cant quite decipher your problem I'm having a slow day), i think your saying your afraid they might escape/fall off? This is fairly easily solved, In my picture you can see that only a very small amount of the top level isnt surrounded by grids (and by using cable ties you could get a grid to cover that bit anyway) Just my piggies arnt very adventurous.

*it no longer bows in the middle as have added cable ties, also i have used lino as a cage base, corex would be much more secure!*

If you ever wonder why cable/zip ties are better have a look at this:

I decided I was going to use them instead of connectors after watching it rolleyes

I actually used grids to make a base for my C & C as well, it gives far more stability :

This makes the whole thing far more rigid & safer if you are going to place on a table or unit :)

Ok ignore me I am having a seriously dense moment lol

My top tier is now built! I have tried to take pictures but It doesn't come out very well. The floor is 2x1 with an extra grid down one length and a grid to create a wall on the the shorter wall so they can't topple off.

Cut the poxy correx just an inch too long so it wouldn't fit inside the grids and had to chop a bit more off mallethead. I'm suprised at just how big it is :)

Hopefully boys will be in their new home tomorrow - pigtures to follow :)

Thank you all for your help

x
