Hi all,

I'm just having a think about our cage. I've got a Midwest Habitat upstairs, but Betty and Bertha spend most of their time downstairs in a 4 x 2 C & C. My husband didn't realise the girls where going to pretty much live downstairs (it was a need to know thing I figured:p ) and he doesn't really like them taking over the lounge.

Does a 3 x 3 give more room than a 4 x 2? That seems like a daft question I know but I'm thinking if that's ok for them I could fit that into the corner of the lounge whereas as the moment the cage sits infront of the patio doors, not a problem now but in summer it'll mean the kids can't easily get in and out.

3x3 = 9sqft
4x2 = 8sqft

That's the beauty of c&c cages, they can fit to your own environment.

Thanks MOC, I felt daft asking, I know 3 x 3 is a bigger area but everyone seems to suggest 4 x 2 so I wondered if somehow piggies prefer rectangles to squares (now I sound really ridiculous wondering if they are particular about shape!)

Hi SallyG

What part of Hull do you come from? Just wondering, I live in Willerby.

My two girls are in my lounge, my husband wasn't overkeen at first but he knows they are harmless and don't smell .

I live in Brough so not too far from you at all!

My husband keeps saying he's allergic to them, I've not been overly sympathetic, what can we do, we've got the girls now and they aren't going anywhere. I have made sure we have anti-histamines though.

I noticed your profile pic, do you let them have free run? I've been wondering whether I'd dare let them out. They are still really shy and spend most of their time in their hidey house when we're around, but when we do pick them up they'll sit on us happily for up to an hour (at least I'm hoping they're happy on not sat frozen in fear?). I think at the moment if I let them out they'd stay hidden away and not move.

Are your piggies chewers?

Hi Sal,

What a small world. My mum lives in Springfield Avenue, Brough and my daughter's name is Sally:))

The thing is it might not be your guinea's he is allergic to. My daughter has allergies and has Zirtec every day but it isn't them think it is dust and pollen as we only got these 2 in August and she was the same before them. The cage is 1foot from where she sits in the living room as well.We just have to watch the tele isn't too loud though. So he might not be allergic to them it could be something at work.:) She has improved since cold weather.

I let them go on the floor and pen it all off with the grids I had left. Ruby doesn't chew. Titch is a chewer it is funny isn't it how some chew and some don't must be their personality. Where they are on the avatar Titch would try to chew the radiator pipe cover but I put them away from there now - she got annoying doing it.mallethead

If you have only just got them I wouldn't worry too much. Titch used to play dead when I got her I have never had a guinea do that - she was wild. Mine used to hide away as well. If they sit for an hour on you they will be very happy I am sure and will venture out of their houses as well soon. How many piggies do you have?

Bye

I've got 2 girlies, Betty & Bertha, they are about 20 months old. They haven't chewed but I did give them a paper bag with hay in yesterday and they seem to be happily chewing through it! They actually squeaked at me tonight when I walked in the living room. I've been at work today so they had a really early breakfast and it was 7pm before I got in. I think they were squeaking for food, the first time they've done that. I am majorly in love with them!

It really is a small world isn't it, I'm only a couple of minutes your mum.

I did wonder about the hay being the problem rather than the piggies, I've bought some hay frim the dust free hay company but at £9 for a small box I don't think I'll keep on buying it, antihistamines are cheaper...:))

Hi Sal

Aww they are brill. names for them. They obviously know you mean lovely things :)) when you come in. Mine look up when they hear the front door go so I guess they must do that when they are in alone. They are lovely things aren't they were yours rescue piggies or did you buy them. I bought mine tried South Cave but they didn't have anything at the time nor did Hull Rabbit Rescue.

Good idea trying dust free. Mine had bad mites so I bought dust free Excell dandelion and marigold from Pets at Home and they seem to sneeze less when foraging and have calmed down itching. It isn't as dusty as the local pet shop hay either. Maybe yours might like it it was £5 a bag but it is compressed so has alot in it.

Bye for now,

S

The girls are from South Cave, they'd had a recent influx of about 12 piggies so we had a few to choose from.

How old are yours? You've got 2 as well haven't you? Girls? Have you always had piggies or relatively new to them?

I was in p@h last week and they had 1 piggie alone in their adoption section, I was so tempted to ask if it was a girl but not sure how B&B would feel about another girl when it had always been just them? I didn't like the thought of it being stuck there with no friends...

Hi Sal,

Aww you were very lucky getting them from there. Did they have to check your house and cage out?

I only got mine in July and rescue at South Cave had only a pregnant female at the time I said I would have her and keep her and a baby she said ok ,I even went there on a Sunday and held and petted her but they never got back to me. I got them from Thorngumbald (won't say the name) let us just say I felt I had to rescue them, there was only these two left and they had chewed ears and hadn't been handled either. They are about 6 months old now and are tame now. I have never owned guineas so wild before. I would never advise going there and wouldn't get another from them.

I have seen the guineas there if you mean Anlaby one. I have to just walk away from them or I would have another one. They have some lovely re-home ones. A boy one they had on Saturday called Soldier had gone by Monday. He was gorgeous. I don't think these two would be very good with another guinea, Titch might but Ruby no way she is so dominant. You will know if yours would accept another. :)

I have had them since I was about 8 so that is 40 years or so (giving my age away there) how about you?

I noticed on South Cave's website they had 12 guineas to re-home, how annoying they weren't there then.mallethead One had been left in a skip with its cage at the tip - how sad is that.

Do enjoy them in your living room?

Yes we had a very thorough house check, I was so nervous! I think South Cave is brilliant for what they do for the animals but I don't think their communication is great. My sister wanted a rabbit and left a message for them but they never returned it.

Sounds like you've saved your 2 from a grim life. Why do people do it? Where do Titch and Ruby live?

Oh wow you've had piggies for ages, these are our first. I've had hamsters and chinchilla's before but never piggies. My husband isn't in to animals really and I was amazed when he suggested getting our youngest a pet for his 5th birthday. He intended for them to live upstairs and we do have a cage up there but I bought C&C grids to use a run in the living room and they've been downstairs most of the time. John isn't overly impressed...Hence why I think I might change it from a 4x2 to a 3x3. I'll have to do it after xmas though when the tree and pressy's have moved. I love them in the lounge with us, they have been really shy but are coming out a lot more now, I love to see them waddling about.

We got the girls in November when the weather was too cold for them to have a run outside, but I need to get a run for outside so they can have a play during the day. Do you have a hutch or run? What kind have you got. I think I'll just get the normal sort of wooden one, the metal ones don't seem to have a safe lid on them.
