Poor Buttons (1 year old) seems off tonight. Her eye is healing nicely but I hadn’t really seen her all day and when they got their fresh hay this evening she didn’t even come out her hidey. I‘ve checked her over and can’t see anything obviously wrong with her - her eyes are clear, no discharge from her nose, her belly is soft and squishy. But she seems incredibly uncomfortable, doesn’t lay down properly and she keeps doing little flicks with her head. Not sure how to describe it, it’s a bit like a mini head toss. I just had her out and I could her a cracking/crunching sound coming from her jaw. It looks like she’s clenching her jaw and that’s when it cracks. She‘s never shown any dental problems before, this is the first time.

Could she have possibly injured herself somehow or could there be something stuck in her molars? We have a vet appontment for her eye on Saturday but will try and bring this forward if she‘s not any better tomorrow morning. I‘ll try her on some syringe feed before bed, see if she‘s interested. It‘s one thing after the other at the moment!

Grinding and crunching of teeth can be a sign of pain and looking uncomfortable too is another sign. I would
try and bring the vet appt sooner if you can, monitor her weight daily too x

Hi!

I would recommend to have her checked for either something stuck in her mouth or ear. there seems to be a localised pain issue somewhere.

Thank you both, I‘ll see how she‘s doing tomorrow morning and what the scales say. If there‘s no improvement I‘ll try to get her seen tomorrow. She‘s had 0.4ml of cat metacam and I got about 10ml of recovery food and 2ml of water into her. She‘s currently in the hay tray munching like nothing ever happened. Not sure if it’s the metacam working or if we somehow managed to get rid of whatever was bothering her but we’ll see how she’s doing in the morning. Definitely happy to see her munch, poor girl must be starving!

Buttons appears to be perfectly happy this morning. She was munching on hay when I came downstairs and she also took a pellet & a pea flake without problems (both of which she couldn’t seem to chew last night). She hasn’t lost any weight; on the contrary, she‘s actually gained a bit. So whatever the problem was, it appears to be gone:yahoo: Call me relieved!

So glad Buttons is ok :) I wonder if she maybe did have something stuck in her nashers with you hearing crunching?! Hopefully no more anyway! x

Her behaviour does feel like there was something stuck that bothered her. She is a big time chewer and will have a good nibble at pretty much everything that crosses her path so it really wouldn’t surprise me if there was something stuck! I think we we got lucky & managed to get it out when I syringed her some CC and water because she started eating normally again right afterwards. :) I‘ll still ask the vet to take a quick look at her teeth when we’re going for her appointment on Saturday, just to be extra sure x
