Hi one of our guinea pigs died last night. Chloe she was 7 - I was going to bury her in the garden but then I saw that some people had buried their piggies in plant pots. I have a plant pot that is 50 centimeters by approximately 50 centimeters. But it is plastic. I would just like some advice please. Do I need to put some drainage holes in the bottom or should I just put some stones at the bottom - I read that you need to bury the guinea pig at the bottom so I was worried about a smell coming out of the bottom and attracting animals that might try to dig her up. Also would you place her in a cardboard box or just lay her in as she is? I have tried to read through the other threads but I haven't found an answer to the drainage question. Thank you.

I used a large terracotta flower pot for mine and placed slate tiles on top of the pit to prevent predators disturbing the burial pot.
I have also buried piggies in the garden and covered the grave with slate tiles or heavy stones.

So sorry for your loss.
Chloe was a great age which is a tribute to your care.

Hi

I am very sorry for your loss.

I use large plastic planters as burial pots for my many piggies but I cover them with decking offcuts and spare paving bricks to prevent the foxes coming into the garden from getting at the bodies. The old pot is then planted up with shallow rooted ground cover and once settled fully down with a suitable pot plant.

In a pinch I have used other plant pots and topped with small perennial.

I would recommend to use ericaceous compost.

Mine are buried in a huge plastic pot. Mine has drainage holes and stones at the bottom to help with drainage. Then a layer of soil, the piggy (mine are wrapped in kitchen paper), then some old heavy tiles to deter predators and then topped off with soil.

Your girl reached a great age. I’m sure you will miss her greatly. Go gently as you grieve.

I’m sorry to read Chloe has hone yo RB
I’ve done as others have said - I’d put drainage holes in the base of the pot
Wrap sweet Chloe in paper towels
Place a layer of stones in the base ,then a little compost/soil ,then Chloe, then fill and press down and add more compost/soil if ness
I put a stone hedgehog on top that I had in the garden to stop anything digging.
Take care as your grieve - amazing ‘old’ girl living her best life with you all
