Don't worry, I'm not feeding my pigs on rabbit food!

They all currently eat burgess excel piggy pellets.

Jeff has one of those balls that you put food in, and he actually chucks it around to get the food out. Now, the normal excel nuggets are too big. The blackcurrant and oregano pellets are the perfect size, but he doesn't eat them (when I gave him a mix of the two, he picked out all the original pellets and left the oregano and blackcurrant ones!)

I was wondering if I could use the Excel Cranberry and Ginseng pellets for rabbits in his ball instead, just as a treat and as enrichment for him? (obviously not as a main food source!)

Hi Amanda,

I'm not sure but I'm scouring through my books as I think I read somewhere that ginseng is poisonous to piggies. Generally, I try to avoid anything marked suitable for rabbits and not either both rabbits and piggies or just piggies. On the whole, rabbits can digest a wider variety of chemicals so much of what is nutritious for rabbits is poisonous for piggies.

I hope that's helpful. While dry food and pellets can be a good supplement to a healthy diet. Really, they are the one thing that piggies can actually do without if they get everything else they need. I would also avoid dry "treats" e.g. milk drops, yoghurt drops, fruity/veg pellets etc. as there is usually and unhealthy level of calcium and/or protein.

Hope that's helpful :)

I don't know about ginseng, but if it turns out to be ok for them, then I don't see why they can't get some of the bunny food :)

I might be wrong, sorry if I am, but I can't think of any reason why not, if it's just as a treat.

Thanks for the reply :) it was the ginseng I was querying most really. I dont use commercial treats for them, bit he loves his little treat ball so I'm looking for something suitable to put in it for him :) I guess I'll keep looking :)

Awww that looks so cool!

Yeah, you could mix some petit pois with some pellets in there. Or dried peas. Diced carrot? Not too much carrot obviously. I think that would work :)

I'll have to get something like that. It seems quite cheap. Next time I'm in P@H I'll compare it to the wooden treat ball/grass ball they have. Have you seen them? I don't think you can get treats in there - I think they'd fall out - but you can put a clump of grass is for them to fight with... :)

Anyway, I hope you piggy appreciates your endeavours and enjoys the ball :)
