Hi all,

I need help. I have a piggy with bumblefoot that I just can’t conquer! He’s been to the vet multiple times and has been put on multiple rounds of SMZs. This poor little piggy’s foot hurts and I need to help him but I’m at a loss. I’ve tried soaking it 2 times a day in iodine and Epsom salt, I’ve tried wrapping it with triple antibiotic ointment, I’ve changed from pine bedding to fleece blankets as bedding and I just can’t get rid of it! Help! This poor piggy has been battling this for almost a year now I think! It subsides then flares up again but never goes away.

I'm very sorry that you're battling bumble foot and I know exactely how you feel because my late Billie also suffered from bumblefoot that didn't respond to treatment.
You can read about our rollercoaster ride in this threat: Billie's paw
Maybe it will give you a suggestion you haven't tried out already.

Billie was on long term Metacam, Baytril to prevent osteomyelitis. For many months I put a bandage on her paw, we also did a lot of paw soaks and I tried different ointments. Bepanthen plus and Flammazine were among the more useful ones in Billie's case.
I switched to group to fleece bedding and it's very important to keep everything as dry and clean as possible.

Is your boy a Teddy?

No he’s not. Thank you I will read through. I’m so sorry you dealt with this too :(

Bumblefoot sucks and is hard to get on top of. A couple of my pigs developed it as they got older and less mobile. Honestly, the best thing I ever found was Betadine ointment. Similar to iodine, but in an ointment form. I would apply it 2 or 3 times a day and try to keep the bedding really, REALLY dry. In my case it worked better than the Flamazine the vet prescribed, though in one case it never fully healed in a senior pig who was on the chubby side, but this made it much less red/inflamed/weepy/swollen.

Hiya, I thought I should add this cos no-one else has mentioned… My piggy Marnie had bumblefoot when she was elderly; our vet at the time included medical grade manuka honey in the feet bandaging treatment with the flamazine (and her feet did heal)
