So my 6.5-year-old pig is being treated for bumblefoot on her right front foot. I feel awful that she has this because we keep the cage clean and trim her nails and such, but the vet thinks that because she is older and on the chunky side that she tends to pee and sit in it and it has probably contributed. So she has been on Baytril and topical Flamazine and her foot has been making slow improvement over the past month or so. So last night, a scabbed area on the sole of her foot came free- it's been looking like it was going to come loose for ages, but when it did it bled heavily. My son and I had to both wrangle her to put pressure and get the bleeding stopped. She was extremely upset and obviously uncomfortable. We had some metacam that was prescribed to her in January that we hadn't given her, so we started with that today because she seemed very subdued, uncomfortable, and was not interested in treats and such. On the metacam, she seems more like her usual self and is back to eating hay and treats normally.

So I guess my question is, is there anything that I can do to help this along, besides the Baytril and the Flamazine? I have read about Betadine soaks diluted with water, but have not been able to find betadine in the pharmacy here. Maybe it goes by a different name in Canada. Is there any other kind of soak I can try to help with healing. I've also heard of using manuka honey, but can't find that here either (maybe in health food stores? But we're in lockdown, most of them are closed right now.) Any help would be appreciated. She's the first pig I've ever had develop bumblefoot and I feel so guilty and terrible for her that it's painful!

Poor little poppet :(

I took on an older girl with bad bumble foot a few years ago & I treated her with Epsom salt foot baths/soaks.
She had bad circulation when I took her on too.

Try keeping her on vet bed to stop her sitting in her urine & irritating her feet.
I also used the UKs gorgeous guineas f&m cream (I think it was called?)

Healing vibes to poorly piggy  xx

@Betsy has just had some success with Patsy 's poorly paws.

Hiya, I'm sorry to hear about your piggo, I do have some advice though. I'm not a vet so please take what I say with a grain of salt but but I've heard really excellent things about CBD oil and cream both for pain relief and as an antibacterial. Saskia of the LA guinea pig rescue has a whole Video on bumblefoot, I recommend checking it out. Here's a link
. She sells the CBD cream used in this video on her website if you're interested.

I treated Patsy with Epsom salt baths twice daily until her feet were better. I put a tablespoon of Epsom salts in 300ml of warm water (in a Patsy sized plastic box), stirred it until dissolved, plonked Patsy in and waited 5 minutes then put her in plain water ( in another Patsy sized plastic box) for 2 minutes to soak the salt off). After that I wiped her tum with a damp cloth to make sure there was no salt on it that she could ingest, dried her off with a towel and put F10 barrier cream on her feet. Then she went in a snugglesafe to dry off fully.

It took 5 weeks of twice daily foot spas. She had Metacam as soon as she went in the foot spa and SS recovery food to keep her still.

Hope you found this helpful @Freela and that your piggy recovers. It's a long process so just stick with it.
