Hi!

My boyfriend (K) and I have 2 young boars. We got Mason early January, and Henry about a week ago.

Soon after K got Henry, he put both guinea pigs in a neutral area so they could get to know each other. Mason was so focused on siniffing Henry's butt to the point where Henry would end up humping Mason's face 😑
Henry kept trying to hump and mount Mason, but Mason wasn't phased since he was either trying to eat, or trying to sniff Henry. They were peeing all over each other and chasing each other. Because of this, we assumed Henry was the more dominant one.

After they tired themselves out, we put both of them in Mason's big cage. Afterwards, MASON started trying to mount Henry and was chasing him around. He wouldn't leave Henry alone... we put 2 igloos for each of them, but every time Henry would go into one... Mason would follow him and basically be in his face. Eventually they got irritated with each other and went crazy in the igloo, so we took both igloos out. We didnt see any blood.

Also, Mason would lunge at Henry (and he still does) and get in his way a lot. For example, Henry would just be hanging out, and then Mason would run behind Henry and go right next to him or in front of him. Henry seems reluctant to eat, especially when Mason is eating too.

K and I put a towel over one portion of the cage so that both guinea pigs could have some cover. Since things weren't really calming down, we separated them, but put the cages next to each other. Mason freaked out and kept running around, biting the cage, and making noise towards Henry's cage. Henry was super chill alone though. He ate and even slept peacefully.

After a day, we put them back together. Things seemed a little better, but mason still seems to bully henry... we tried taking them a buddy bath... Henry seemed fine, but once we put Mason in, mason was freaking out, so Henry freaked out. Afterwards, they seemed calm when we dried them, so we put them back in the same cage.

Henry stays in one corner often, even when Mason sleeps in the 1 igloo. Mason still squeezes himself behind and around Henry sometimes. Mason still lunges at times. They both waddle their butts sometimes too.

I saw Mason cleaning Henry's face a few times. They slept next to each other a few times too, not recently though.

Is Mason bullying Henry? Are they still trying to figure out who's dominant? It feels like Henry is fine alone, but Mason wants to get to Henry if we separate them. Any advice helps. Thank you!

Hi and welcome

Please remove any houses with only one exit and any areas a piggy can get cornered in. They are a strict no no during bonding and the post-introductory ca. 2 weeks dominance phase which has its name for a good reason! That is the time when the group is established and the small print of the relationship is worked out. The introduction itself only covers acceptance and the establishment of leadership.

The behaviour is still within acceptable parameters. Lunging is first and foremost a defensive gesture, a very strongly worded 'stay away from me'.

Please take the time to carefully read our comprehensive bonding guide (which cover both boar bonding specifics as a boar-boar bondings and the dominance phase) and our comprehensive boar guide (which also contains a chapter on the no nos with boars.
You will find our guides both helpful and interesting!
