hi my OH and i have decided to upgrade our cage but want to try something new and have made the choice to build one, if possible can anyone give me a list of materials i can use and what to avoid and also any safety hazards i should be aware of?

I have little experience in this area, but these are some points I would keep in mind:

-If you have baby guinea pigs, make sure the gaps in the wire are small enough that they won't escape.

-Use guinea pig-friendly wood

-Make sure they have somewhere to hide in the run, as well as a spot for food and water that you can clean easily

Sorry I can't be of more help! Good luck :)

OK, did some research and it's difficult to find info, but cedar and pine shavings are poisonous to guinea pigs, and untreated wood is recommended. Aspen and hardwood are good for shavings so it would probably be the same thing. We really need an expert to come along and give you some knowledgeable advice! Sorry I can't help more!

i bought a brilliant two storey hutch that came flat-pack so i assembled it myself. i just leave the bottom doors open and create a run around that so they can go in and out as they please.
would it not be better to do something like that, to avoid all the risks that aussiegirl suggested? it might be more expensive but it'd be safer and probably a lot easier too :))
