Hello,
I've been scrolling the internet to find an answer to my question but had no luck and was wondering if anyone had any tips.
The black/dusty/peppery looking mite/lice (not sure if it's a mite or lice but looks like pepper), my pigs had been running around the house on carpets and basically everywhere in the early days of when these bugs were multiplying on them. They have both had treatment and are absolutely fine. But I dont want them to run around the house and catch them again so is there anything I can do to the carpets/sofa etc or do these bugs die off after a few weeks of having no host?
Sorry for the essay :)
Many thanks

Sorry I can’t be of much help. I’ve heard of hay mites and some others that cab affect piggies, but not ones you can see running around the house.
Do you have other animals?
I’m sure someone more experienced will be along to help soon

Did your vet confirm whether it was mites or lice? You can’t see mites with the naked eye and lice can be seen. I don’t know how likely it is for them to catch it again. With hay mites you usually change the hay you get. And likely once off the body they wouldn’t thrive. Same goes for lice - I think they’re species specific. They should be fine, I don’t know that they can catch them from the carpet. It’s not a suitable host for them.

I’ll tag @Piggies&buns @VickiA maybe they can help you out more.

Hi!

Are you talking of hay mites (chirodiscoides caviae)? They usually come with imported mass-produced and industrially harvest hay but are not picked up by roaming in the house.
New guinea pigs: Sexing, vet checks&customer rights, URI, ringworm and parasites

Thank you for your answers, sorry I meant that they got them off the hay and i realised they had been out for floor time, then I realised they needed treating. So I didn't know if the mites can still be living on everything they had touched.

Give the room a good deep clean with vet grade F10 disinfectant (useful thing to have around with pets anyway) and hoover the carpet thoroughly.
