Hi guys,
I have a guinea pig, she is maybe 20 weeks old.
She has started to have a suds noise (when suds bristle in the bath) or maybe it's a crackling noise when she breaths
It's not there all the time, just some times.
She has sneezed/coughed also but it is not on a regular basis.
She is eating well l, in good spirits and is continuing to put on weight.
She gets on well with her cage buddy. She has not shown any signs of a uri but not sure if this is what the 20 week old Guinea pig has. Any advice?
The vets are closed until tuesday next week due to Christmas. I have Bene Bac plus, would this help in the meantime? Tia

It’s good if she is still putting on weight. I would consider switching to weighing daily and get her booked in with the vet for a check next week. I don’t know that benebac would help as it’s for the gut.

I agree in that she should be checked by a vet if there is a potential breathing issue.
benebac is a probiotic which can help as a supplement for a digestive upset

Thanks. Is there anything I could do in the meantime before tuesday to help her and not have it progress any further?

No not really because we have no idea what is wrong and we don’t recommend any home treatments anyway. If she has a uri, then she needs proper medication. Do you not have out of hours vets available that you can take her to?

Got my hands on some baytril off a rescue centre, hopefully she will be okay until vets reopen. The vets said they wouldn't see her as she wasnt in a bad enough way. Ireland for you! How do you give the bene bac? Do you give it straight away when first starting the antibiotics?
Thanks for all your help!

That’s a shame the vets have said that - if you wait until they are ‘bad enough’, then it can be too late, given prey animals hide illnesses.

Did the rescue centre tell you how much and how often to give the baytril? Only vets can tell you what dosage to give as it’s based on many different factors

Probiotics need to be given a couple of hours after a dose of antibiotics - don’t give it at the same time as antibiotics

I know, just typical Ireland everything has to be on its last legs before its considered an emergency :)
The GPig is 590grams, they said give 0.25 twice daily. The baytril is 2.5%.
Super, is that everyday for the probiotic? Think on the box it says give twice one day then leave 3 days inbetween next probiotic dose
Really appreciate your help! :D

Definitely a vet check. From my experience, piggies can be doing really well in every other way with a URI, but they can quickly and suddenly deteriorate.
hope you can find a better vet! 🤞🏻

You give the probiotic every time you’re to give antibiotic. An hour or two before you do so. I don’t know about the dosage for the antibiotic but hopefully someone will be along to help.

Thank you! I'll be booking her into the vet anyway on tuesday, going to a different vet outside of my hometown, meant to have a great exotic animal vet. Fingers cross all is good! 🙌🏻
