I noticed today that one of my Guinea pigs has brown waxy flakes all through their fur. None of the other guineas have anything even remotely similar. I looked up hay mites online to compare, and they don’t appear to be any kind of insect or parasite but I’m not sure. The flakes are waxy, and the same color as my guineas ear wax, but are all over his lower back area. I’m not sure if it’s possible that it is just wax and dirt. My Guinea is on the older side (6 years) and does have a hard time with grooming. I am reaching out to my vet to schedule an appointment but they don’t have any appointments available for the next month so. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Are the specks stuck to the hair shaft? if you run your fingers down the hair do the specks move?

If not, then they are most likely egg casings from hay mites. They fix their eggs to the hair shaft - they wont brush out for example.
Hay mites themselves are not visible and the egg casings are the only part you can see.

All we can advise you to do is to see a vet for diagnose and the correct course of treatment.
