Hi names Britt my guinea pigs name is Nyx she's 8 months old and I took out a two nights ago and her toe got caught on her cage door and she started trying to jump out of my hands And squirm before I could unstuck her toe and I ended up dropping her and now I'm very sure her toe is broken. Yesterday I called 32 different vets and none of them I could afford or they don't treat guinea pigs or weren't accepting new animals for another two to three months. One vet actually got on the phone after their assistant listened to me bawling it was the 32cnd vet I called. And he told me to use see gauze and medical tape and bind her toe to her other toes. She doesn't seem to be in pain she walks around fine and when I wrapped her foot she ran all over her cage and climbed whatever she could to get the wrap off she will let me touch her foot except for wrapping then she Yanks her foot away. But idk what to do is there anything else I can do for her? I'm so worried about nyx especially since I can't take her to a vet I just can't afford it rn and the vets I can afford aren't taking new clients please help me I just want to make sure she heals and stays okay

I'll post pictures of it when I get off work and get home

Please try and see if you can borrow money from someone so your piggy can be seen. Also try and speak to the vets about a payment plan. We can’t really tell from a photo, she really just needs to be seen by a vet.

Does Nyx live alone or did she have a friend who passed away? If not then you should really consider getting her a friend. Piggies are very social and need constant companionship of their own kind.

If I could I would but idk anyone with the kind of money would need none of the vets can do payment plans n I tried applying for carecredit I was denied. Most of the 32 I called don't see guinea pigs they see cats n dogs n the ones I could afford aren't taking new animals

As for a friend no I give her tons of love I'm a cashier part time so I don't work much n where I live I can only have one guinea pig

There is no harm in asking around. Perhaps you could get some money from different people? Where do you live that only allows one guinea pig at a time. You giving her tons of love isn’t enough I’m afraid. You can’t speak her language no matter how much you think you do.

How much are the vet costs and what would they be doing? I know they can be expensive in some countries where guinea pigs aren’t known much about or aren’t a ‘popular’ pet.

I live in an apartment that's low income n I spent from the time of the accident to all of yesterday asking around to borrow money from friends n family. I haven't slept for almost 48 hours now because of trying to figure out what more I can do besides what the one vet who talked to me on the phone said to do

Is there any charity or similar which could help you pay for vet fees? Otherwise I don’t know if there’s anything you can do. If guinea pigs aren’t really many where you are then you likely don’t have rescues either.
Please can you add your location to your profile - state/town/county/country. We have people from all over the world and it’s difficult to tailor info when we don’t know where you’re located.

River Falls Wisconsin USA n only on I Kno of can If I can find a vet in their Wisconsin area to take her but all the ones I called in Wisconsin near me do dogs n cats nsome do bird care

Did you contact the two listed in the link below?

I’m sorry if what I say is not what you want to hear. I mean no hurt by it. But I think it may be best for you to reconsider whether you’re able to care for the guinea pig(s) as you should. I know vet fees in US can be a lot more expensive for small animals, but if you’re struggling to pay for a check will you be able to pay for future visits if she falls ill and needs even more expensive treatment?

Secondly, as I said before, it’s not fair to keep her alone for potentially 8 more years. That would be a really lonely existence for her.

If her foot is broken she is likely in pain. Even if it’s a sprain she will be in pain. Did you speak about a payment plan with the vets you rang up? What is the breakdown of the costs? Was there an x-ray included? That may be what hikes up the price.

She really only likes spending time with my husband's cat n my cousins hamster n people she was actually moved into her own cage at the pet store I got her from because she doesn't like other guinea pigs.

Right now yes I do think staying with me is what's best for her. Yes I can't afford the expensive vets n the ones I can aren't accepting new pets but that doesn't mean as time passes I won't be able to afford vet care in the future right now only reason why I can't is because my hours were cut thanks to covid n my rent n bills being due both this week and next. But the vet is the only thing I can't afford for my baby rn. Her food bedding toys veggies fruits treats all of that I afford for her every week I might be a little stocked up because I buy stuff every week because she is my baby my little girl. And considering she really don't like other guinea pigs even if I could have a second one I wouldn't my apartment complex always one pet per person n they are therapy animals and I would never ever part Nyx n my husband's cat Precious they adore each other every time Nyx would come out for play time she'd run around a bit n then find Precious n curl up next to her she's done that since she was brought home at four months.

My friends exes guinea pig n her had a play date once n she kept biting him n hard n running away to hide or would run to my husband's cat n hide between her legs. The only animal besides my husband's cat she likes is my cousins hamster. YYes i know that's not ideal for a guinea pig but never have I had normal or ideal animals in my family I had a chinchilla for five years that loved playing with my cats I had. N I Know most will say her friends n companions need to be fellow guinea pigs but we'll my baby girl is a goof n I'm a okay with that.

now as I stated I called 32 vets one of those calls led to the assistant or receptionist whatever she is called giving the phone to the actual vet. Who I can afford n is willing to see in two months when they can accept new pets. Now that's a long wait and situation but it's what I've got but as I stated I made this post Because I wanted to know if there is more I can do besides wrapping n binding her toe to her other toes n lessoning her movement as much as possible he had even walked me through the wrapping n binding on the phone.

Now if you have some actual advice pertaining to what I'm asking for please give it otherwise shush your typing and let someone else help.

thank you very much.

btw no what you said didn't hurt it just straight me off. So yes this message may be a bit cranky sounding but well I'm fine with that.

You have been given the only advice we can given - your piggy needs to be taken to a vet. There is nothing you can do yourself as potentially x rays and pain relief is needed.

That part I'm fine with hearing as long as people are understanding the situation what is not fine to hear or be told is that I should be rehoming her since I can't take to a vet at current. The soonest she can get in is August 4th. The appointment has been set up the only problem is the wait but it's the only vet whose willing to take her n I can afford them. Its even the same vet that works with the pet store I got her from. And he gave me a lot of advice and everything that I can do at home until I can get her in. I just want to know if there is more I can do for the at home care. Because in all the times I've had animals in my family guinea pigs chinchillas dogs cats bunnies snakes rats mice hamsters gerbils n fish I've never had Any of them break anything and rarely have my animal family members gotten sick. But it has been years since I had a guinea pig and though I have all my books for caring for one that knowledge is not enough for me especially in this situation.

The only thing I can say though rn is when I changed her wrap there was no swelling. It was pointing outward as much as it had before it was positioned more normal n she started vibrating as soon as the wrap was off n making her happy noises.

We are all understanding of the situation, we know that financially Covid has caused quite a problem, but it is essential she gets vet care now. In suggesting rehoming siikibam was simply trying to get your piggy care right now as leaving her untreated is not fair on her. Is there a charity that may be able to help you - in the uk we have a charity who can assist in such situations. 4 August is far too long for such a serious issue - you also say she was dropped, there could be internal issues depending on how far she fell. It doesn’t matter if it isn’t pointing outward as much now, I’m afraid it isn’t in any way conclusive that there isn’t a huge problem here. She absolutely will be in pain and there is absolutely no home care that will help here (we would never recommend home care in any event)

No one has suggested you re-home your piggy. It was asked whether you had considered whether you could provide the care she needs especially if she gets ill in the future and from your reply it is apparent that you have considered that and are confident you can provide that care. I know the written word can come across as harsh at times but I think the way it was put across was the most delicate way for a sensitive discussion topic.

Toe is not broken my friend took her in late this morning to her vet that does care for guinea pigs. It wasn't sprained either. The vet said she was okay they did an x-ray and there was nothing wrong. I was told the vet told my friend that I was just overly worried. And that her toe may have just looked like it was pointing outwards because she was spreading her toes out and probably was keeping them spreading out cuz of being sore.

I apologise for getting cranky like I said I hadn't slept and last night was some very restless sleep but now that my baby girl is home and is a okay I'm Gunna get her a treat and then get myself some nice good sleep before some snuggles and play time

Thanks for the apology.

stressful situation, but people were just trying to help. I am pleased your little one is home and sending her lots of healing vibes.

please keep us updated about her
