Hi all,

First post but I've found the advice on here really useful when building a home for our two pigs (6 months old).

Today when clipping nails we noticed that one had a broken nail and a worryingly dark toe (see picture below). No sign of any blood but it looks like she lost the nail a while ago. She has been running around crazily as usual and we haven't noticed any change in behaviour.

Our local vet is closed today, obviously will call them tomorrow morning but just wondered if anyone had seen anything similar before?

Worth a rotine vet check just to make sure, but the dark area is really just on the tip so may be bruising and the scab- toe scabs from ripped off nails persist a long time and can look very black! The toe itself looks pink and healthy, no redness or swelling that might indicate infection/ no blue-grey colour that might indicate poor circulation, so I think this looks fine really. You might maybe if you are unsure take a photo every day and check the dark area isnt spreading back over the healthy toe area, but that looks like a healthy toe to me :)

Hi!

It looks like a ripped out nail.

See a vet if you have concerns and especially if the toe is looking red and swollen compared to its counterpart on the other foot (right now it is not), as those are the signs of an infection. Toes without their nail tend to look thicker than you'd expect.

It is not an uncommon injury; the nail grows back in most cases if a bit thicker or distorted. Mobility is generally not impacted.
