My pair of boars have been living happily in their 2 storey hutch in the garden since about April. As usual, I am planning to bring them inside soon for the autumn and winter.

I have a perfectly nice inside cage which they are quite happy in. It is 2 foot by 4 and is adequate for their needs. The only trouble is it only has small opening at the front, making it difficult to access. It has a wider opening on the top, but because of where I keep it (on a shelf in the utility room) I can't reach that. This makes it difficult to clean out.

This year I am thinking about changing over to fleece rather than woodshavings due to my allergies (I tried Vetbed last year but it was a smelly disaster). But I won't be able to sweep or hoover if I leave the cage where it is.

So I want to move it to another room, but the trouble is that room is carpeted and I am worried about hay etc getting all over the place. What do other people do? How do you stop that? It's fine in the utility room where I can sweep the lino, but carpet is a different matter.

Also, with the fleece I intend to put in a litter tray of shavings or similar in the hope that the boys will do their business there (they do have one corner they seem to prefer for this). Is this realistic? Can you litter train guinea pigs? And is 3 yrs old too late to try this?

I have thought about a C&C cage but this seems like an unnecessary expense at present. Maybe at some time in the future I might change over.

This is a photo of the cage in our short-lived vetbed phase last year. I think you can see the small door at the front and why it would be difficult to access for sweeping up.

Can you buy a tarp and put it on that leaving a big enough amount to cover the carpet you want to protect?

That or some kind of plastic sheeting?

I have a C&C cage & put the coroplast like a wall Where the Hay Is, I don't see why you couldn't do something like that with that cage.

i get hay on the carpet but because it is not a deep pile it just hoovers off
