My 2 girls have lived inside my shed in a 5x2 double hutch with permanent access to an outdoor run, however it is so cold in there these past few mornings, I've made the decision to bring them inside so I have purchased a ferplast 140. The only place the cage can go is on my bedroom floor, I'm fine with that, however my dog sleeps in my bedroom at night and I'm worried he might bother the pigs and scare them. He only has access to my bedroom at night when I'm there, the rest of the time he is downstairs free to roam wherever. Any suggestions?

Maybe let him sniff them in the cage down stairs during the day first?

I have 4 open top piggies in our room and 2 dogs that sleep in our room at night too, it's never been a problem :-)

They did used to live downstairs but I think they all just got used to each other

i have a 13 year old dog, 10 guinea pigs all open top and there's never any problems, the guinea's have gotten used to Calam (Calamity).

I guess it depends on the breed too , my late dog was a terrier and she could not be trusted around anything small and furry , she would have caused harm to them I have no doubt.

I'd agree, it very much depends on the dog. My 7 year old poodle cross, is okay when I'm in the room but if I turn my back he gets over excited, jumpy and snarls at them. Luckily I have a very bolshy guinea pig who just comes to the side of the cage and lets him lick her, but I wouldn't trust him for in the room alone or for any longer than 10 minutes even if I'm there.

I was staying at my sisters for a while and had to have my two boars Gizmo (pictured) and Maugwai move into my sister living room onto a side table.my sister has a springer spaniel..who would jump up and put her nose in the cages, bothering mr gizmo and mr maugwai...eventually l told the dog.." you will get a bite dog if you dont leave them alone"...she did..." mr gizmo gave her a nip on the nose...and the dog never bothered the piggys again.

 In my humble opinion, dogs or cats should never be left alone with small animals. Even in an enclosed cage with a lid, and excited dog may start barking and badly frighten the small pets or knock over the cage. Cats have very sharp claws that can injure a piggie if the cat reaches through the bars. Most small dog breeds were bred to chase rodents.

Your right
but at the time l had to either move into my sisters with her spaniel or re.home my boys.(and l was not going to do that..they are my babies and they knew l would never let any harm come to them)at the time l was going thru a nasty seperation and found out my husband had an affair l couldnt bear anymore heartache or stress on them.the pigs were happy enough and the dog stayed away..(milo)the dog got disaplined everytime and eventually gave up and lost interest.
lm in my own home now..with a garden and maugwai is happy.sadly gizmo passed away just before xmas (he was five and a half) maugwai was upset ..l have two younger boars teebo and bandit who get along with maugwai (who is six ) he tends to father them alot which is nice to see.
l will miss mr gizmo he was my little magician.

We had 2 GSD type dogs when I last had pigs. Both had a very strong prey drive, but grew up around the pigs so didn't see them as food whilst they were outside. The girl dog ignored them totally and the boy would play-bow at them in their run. The older pig ignored him but the younger one would popcorn around and squeal in circles whenever he played with her. She even came up to the bars and gave his nose a kiss once, a slightly toothy kiss, but he seemed happy with it!

Gsd's are big doggies...as long as you knew your dogs well enough...personally l wouldnt keep prey and predator in same area...

Because you just never know...

Animals are animals and have their primal instincts still..no matter how many years of evolution...♡♡♡

Remember that scene from watership down....
with the dog running up the hill ...his big sharp teeth...and all the bunnies ...

" RUN RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!"
that scared me alot...and l would never trust any dog or cat near a prey animal.
♡♡♡

We never let them interact without there being bars in between! Dogs will be dogs after all and it's not worth the risk.

Having said that.... My mum's JR will kill rabbits for fun, but totally refused to kill the rats in our old garden. It was like they had some sort of deal going on. What a rubbish JR!

This is back in the late 80's when it seemed like a good idea! Pudding, the Yorkshire terrier used to love the piggies. She would follow them round, licking them and cleaning then like they were her babies and she would also share their muesli. Wouldn't dare repeat that with a dog and piggies now - would be terrified that something would go wrong! Still a very cute photo though

I have two guinea pigs and a 5 month old shih tzu. My shih tzu has been brought up with the pigs since he was 8 weeks old so I know deep down he would never purposely harm them but I wouldn't leave them together unsupervised. He tries to lick the guinea pigs and the guinea pigs appear to quite like him. I have a baby gate on the guinea pigs room as they are on the floor in an open top c&c cage so he can't get in alone but when I go in their room if the dog is with me, the guinea pigs come running to the bars.image.webpimage.webp

So sweet...l guess since your little doggy knows nothing else then he can be trusted to a point.
when l lived with my sister l didnt trust her spaniel milo at all ...the dog was wired...spaniel syndrome...so l kept my boys high up on a side counter press where the dog could not reach much...only just her nose tip went near the bars and one of my boys mr gizmo ( avatar pic) ran up and bit her hard in the nose.
the dog never bothered the piggies after that.♡♡♡
