Ok, first post so please be patient with me. :)

So, we are going to a rescue place next Tuesday to choose 2 new girls to bring home, and therefore will be getting the cage ready this weekend.
We already have a Nero 4 cage but also have some grids (and hopefully soon some corex).
I've been wondering. Rather than not use the Nero, can I use the Nero (maybe just the base) as a hay/food area and have an attached c&c cage for play etc...?

Question is, how to help the guineas in and out of the nero? I was thinking one of those wooden stick domey things through the cage opening/over the ridge of the base. Would this be too sleep or are there better ways? I can't imagine the litle ones will be able to jump in and out surely?

I do have a wooden house too which I suppose I could use to help but my previous guineas never made any effort to get on top of it (tho coped fine with the ramp in the outdoor double hutch).

Or should I just cut my losses and build a new c & c cage with hayloft..? Decisions decisions. I'm trying to design it to be easier to keep clean you see..

Already have hammockyhammock stubby tunnel and corner hammock on order, but need to think how I'm going to lay it all out so it's not too cramped..

Advice please. :)

They might be able to hop in themselves, but if they can't, some people do use those wooden stick domey things (lol, a good way to explain it!). Or maybe you could make a ramp out of a grid? Check the c&c cage gallery in the housing section, and you might find some photos of ramps made of grids :)

Hiya,

Mine use ramps (covered in fleece for grip) to get between different levels of their cage. Mine also jump on top of their huts ..... if I was doing something like that I would either use a hut inside and out as long as it looked safe enough for them (ie no chance of legs etc getting caught between things) or a ramp ..... or cut a hole in the side of the nero (which you may not want to if you ever wanted to sell it).....

Good luck with your new piggies - I'm sure more suggestions will be along soon - would love to see pigtures of your new arrivals and your setup when you get it done,

We have two cages similar to the Nero 4 which we put side by side, and ours used to quite happily hop over the hurdle in the middle! They used to stand one either side and have a chat, like next door neighbours chatting over the fence! We now have a C&C enclosure as the two cages side by side wasn't big enough for five. I have seen people use the base of a Nero or similar in the corner of a C&C. Might try that myself, as the hay does go Everywhere, and sticks to the fleece! Good luck with joining Piggle Land. Sure you'll soon be obsessed, like me! X x

I had mine in a large floor pen with a big IKEA crate as a hay area. It was 16 cm high and the girls jumped in and out with ease but Bo preferred the ramp, which I made with one of the big stick bridge things :)

Hi you! Here is my solution to giving them more space and levels (I buy FAR too many toys for them and I want to give them loads of room too... my Guinea pigs can actually jump completely up that ladder in one move, which is about a foot above the base.

I would however recommend either giving them enough room on the shelves or putting a little railing up, as if they are as daft as my two they will constantly back up and fall off the shelves!

These are those wooden play stick things, they make great bridges and ramps and keep their nails in check.

OH, and I chose to put a bridge between my two cages as I am constantly scared one will catch it's leg between the bars, which would be an almost certain break.

We had a similar set up when we first got our piggies and they were fine with the wooden bendy bridge but weren't so confident as they got older so we built them some steps!

Thanks guys.
I guess I was used to my previous oldies. We lost our pair of boars (Itchy and Scratchy) in February. They were about 7 and we'd had them for 3 years. They never made any attempt to get on the house we have so assumed they couldn't. SO maybe they were just old, or lazy of course... :)

Will get it setup and post pics after they come home next week.

Anyone know how I can remove the duplicate post I seem to have managed to post?

Yeah my old two never done anything strenuous, lazy moo's. However I thought I would test these two, and I knew they could so I put a ladder and platform in there and put some lettuce up the top... They didn't care about the effort theN! Hehehe

Yeah my old pig doesn't jump on top of the houses, but the young ones do! :))

Not sure how old the girls I'm going to get are but will hope for some more spritely ones. :)
