I just recently got a guinea pig about a week ago. I received it from a previous owner who got it from another person. When I got my Jeffrey he seemed timid and I considered this normal. It's only been a few days but when I pick him up or when he gets scared he makes this breathy squeak sound. Is that normal? I read about how it can lead to problems and this is scaring me. Is it that he isn't accustomed to me yet? I've only heard one loud squeak and that was because my friends foot bumped into him. He purrs a lot but I haven't really heard a loud squeak. I'm not sure how old he is but maybe that is the problem. HELP!

If you can, take him to the vet as respiratory worries within guinea pigs can be quite serious!
And hey, if it turns out that the breathy squeek is just your pig being a weirdo :P and the vet laughs at you, well so what? As long as your pig is well!

Some of my pigs occaisonally make a 'huffy' kind of wheeeak noise, like they're trying to squeeeee for food but whisper at the same time..

if I'm honest with you...
if you have any sort of worries about breathing take your piggie to the vet... because lets face it i'd rather waste my time and £19 taking one of my piggies to the vets rather than not bother and they pass away...

it could be just a vocalisation...

does it sound more wheezy or like a squeek....?

Thanks for the feedback. When he does the sound its both a wheezy and squeak sound. I will probably take him in just to be safe.

If your worried see a vet.

My Parsley (aka chunky) used to make silly breathy sounds while trying to squeak, but she sounded like she was trying to hard to squeal that she was just pushing air out of her lungs too quick lol. Shes in perfectly good health (touch wood). But i would certainly get your piggie checked out if your worried in anyway.

That's what I'd do! Always take them to a vet if you're not sure.

We did have one little girl a few years ago whose normal squeak was more of a wheeze than a squeak. It was perfectly normal for her, but we got her checked anyway, bless her!

I hope there's nothing sinister going on and you've just got a slightly weird boy! :P
