Breathing sounds

About a month ago my guinea pig Frankie started making a clicking noise while she was breathing and sounded congested. She was eating, drinking, and behaving normally. We went to the vet and the vet said she had mild nasal congestion. She was put on an antiobiotic. The breathing noises did not go away. A few days ago I noticed a louder crackling sound when she was breathing and her breathing was fast. Again, no other symptoms. She is eating, drinking, playing with her sister, and behaving normally. I'm unsure if this is a URI or allergies. I dont know if I should be worried and take her back to the vet. Like I said, she is behaving normally and eating/drinking. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, do take her back to the vet. Only a hands on check is going to tell you what is going on with her and it is never worth leaving breathing issues unchecked.

In the meantime, while you are waiting to get to the vet, keep an eye on her weight to check she is in fact eating enough hay (as it makes up the largest part of their diet but you can’t gauge intake by eye). Also check that you don’t have any scented items in the room which may have irritated her - such as candles, plug ins, perfumes etc

I would take her in again. How long was she on the antibiotics, which one was she given and what was the dosage? Did you change their bedding? Have a look at the thread on irritants and see if there’s anything on there that could be a trigger. But as said, it’s best you go to the vet again if it hasn’t stopped.

Thank you for your reply. She was on .23mL of Enrofloxacin for 10 days. I do a big cleaning and changing of bedding every 2 weeks and do spot cleaning every day. I use fleece for the bedding.

Thank you. I do have candles on the other side of the room. I will remove them. I am going to call the vet.
