One of my piggies is becoming increasingly frail lately and I've been recommended to feed him bran mash (along with other things such as sweetcorn, banana). Has anyone fed this to their pigs before? What did you buy if so?

Ive seen some people in Facebook groups talking about Bran Mash and Cooked Potatoes for piggies in the winter. But the idea of both those things scare me TBH, your not supposed to feed potatoes and bran mash just seems an odd thing to feed piggies? Just my 2 cents...

It has been recommended by someone with a great deal of piggy experience so I'm happy its good to feed to him. Not so sure about the potato though! Never been recommended that, don't think that would do his digestive system much good.

I have fed wheatbran to help gain weight but it is just a small amount and I didn't mash it. I am actually waiting for clarification on the best way to feed it. I don't give it to any pigs with inflammation issues though as it is a grain.

Wheatbran sounds like it might be suitable. These things are just to supplement his diet and keep the weight up.

I used to feed my old guinea pig a bran mash. I am not sure if it was good for him or not but he lived until he was about 14/15 years old. The vet kept asking me if it was still the same piggy each time I had to take him to vets.

I bought my bran loose from a small local pet shop. I remember them weighing it out into a brown paper bag for me. I used to give him a couple of dessert spoonfuls at night as a treat. Mixed with boiled water and left to cool down before feeding him it. He loved it.

Wow, 15 years? I think the world record holder was 15 years. Unfortunately my old boy is unlikely to see his 6th birthday, but things like diet changes can keep him feeling better and holding his weight for longer.

I think an Australian piggy called Sweetie was sixteen! He was in the guinea pig magazine. I'm sorry about your poorly little one.

He was a rescue piggy, my sisters friend had him and his cagemate. His cagemate died and he wasn't looking after snowball and wanted rid of him. I persuaded my parents to let me have him. I had him at least 13years and apparently he was 2.

Sweetie was the one I was thinking of! You never know, Eddie might surprise me if I make sure he gets the best foods to eat and keep him happy. He has done well so far!

Amazing. I would love my piggies to keep going to such an age!

One of my ponies has regular bran mashes, its cheap to buy from horse feed suppliers, about £6.00 for 20kg bag. You put some in a bowl, pour boiling water on and cover, leaving to cool down before feeding.
Wheat bran has a very high phosphorous to calcium ratio though so for horses you have to add the calcium back with a supplement called limestone flour to correct the imbalence, I dont know if you would have to for guinea pigs though....
