Bramble, one of our two more dominant sows, has developed a habit of chewing Daisy one of the undersows hair. Daisy has long hair and seems to just let Bramble do it.

Is this a dominance thing and how can we stop her from doing it? Daisy's hair around her head is a mess with her doing it and we don't want Bramble getting a hair ball.

Can anyone give any advice?

I need an answer to this too, it's called barbering:)

I have two peruvian sows that had lovely long silky hair now they look like they have had a fight with a lawnmower:{

Sorry, I don't have any advice!

My short haired guinea pig Bruce always did it to my sheltie, Felix (who was the dominant one) I always thought it looked as if Bruce was saying 'I can do something you can't do'! :))

I never worried about it though,, Felix wasn't bothered & Bruce didn't do it too much. I think it's just a natural thing they do sometimes.

Sometimes I think the hair gets mixed in with the hay too - Holly just carries on munching hay with Bernie's (peruvian) hair - he gets cross and tells her off when she pulls it mallethead She almost looks surprised as to what she's done :^-

It's not barbering as Bernie is the dominant boy pig.

He used to have such lovely long sideburns rolleyes

As long as it's nothing to worry about. I think it annoys us more than Daisy. We just don't want Bramble bullying her. She never barbers our wee Aby Willow so it seems to me to be her putting Daisy in her place.

It's also surprised us that Daisy puts up with it because otherwise she is the grumpiest Pog we own:))

She's very short tempered and never backwards at letting her opinion be known when any of the others get in her face!

I don't want to alarm you - I've heard a lot of stories about this and its not been anything bad, just something they do - but my guinea pig, Ringo, did this to Freddie when he was ill. I think it was a mixture of confusion and comfort-seeking. Freddie didn't seem too bothered by it, even though he ended up with bald patches. But Ringo was very obviously ill at the time so if your pig seems fine don't let me alarm you!

Barbering can be a sign of boredom, stress or lack of fibre in the piggy's diet. Make sure they're getting loads of hay and floor time, but apart from that I don't know what to suggest. :{

Ohhh Molly is always chewing on Hunny's hair! Molly is a short haired pig and Hunny has long hair so I think its just grooming. They don't have much other way of getting tangles out TBF :P
