Hi guys so I have 2 pigs (Rhett and link) who were cage mates and they had a falling out November 25th this past year and have been separated ever since but always just shared a wall and they were happy with that arrangement. My girlfriend had tried to have them reintroduced around January and it didn’t work out. Well the other week my girlfriend tried again and they were completely different. Link was trying to mate with Rhett or atleast that’s what it seemed like. I know he wasn’t trying to assert dominance because I know what that looks like. They weren’t teeth chattering at all and they were just occasionally spraying pee. When link would hump Rhett his penis was FULLY out and all Rhett was doing was trying to get him off. I think I did see boar glue but it got wiped away by them walking on it. After they calmed down they went to the corner of the area they were in and just laid together.

I just want to know what they were doing and if maybe they could live together again. They also try to chew on the bars between them and I’m 99% sure they aren’t bored they have everything they could ever need.

Also here is a picture of them together after all the humping!

Firstly are you sure they’re both boys? I would double check to be sure. I’m not sure that dominance always includes teeth chattering and rumbling.

When you split them up had blood been drawn? How old were they and how big was their cage? If they did draw blood then you can’t re introduce them I’m afraid.

Yes they are both boys I immediately checked again just to make sure.
Also when I got them I wasn’t sure of the age but definitely less than a year. I have c&c cages with each panel being 14 x 14 inches and when they were together they had a 3x3 with an upper level included.

Unfortunately they were separated because one nipped the other and drew some blood. It’s just that this behavior their displaying is something they have never done which is why I’m not sure if it’s one trying to be dominant or not.

It may be a case of them trying to sort out the hierarchy. Boys go through their teenage years between 4 and 14 months, so if they don’t gel personality wise, there could be a fallout.

When you try to re introduce, do you do it in a neutral area? What happens exactly?

Yes it’s in a neutral area they are taken to a different room entirely. Link just goes to hump Rhett and they don’t really make any noises. The majority of the time they were out today together link was humping Rhett and his penis was out every time he went to hump him. All Rhett did was kind of push him off or run away. They also would throw their bums at each other and start spraying pee, atleast I think it’s pee. Then after everything they just laid down together like in the picture and sometimes even more comfortably like with their legs out.

Mounting is mold dominance behaviour. It sounds like your boys are finally past their teenage months. If they have not had a serious fall-out with full-on bites, there is always a small chance that they may be able to settle together again but things can fall down in during the post-bonding dominance phase.

Please read our comprehensive bonding guide, which is taking you through all stages in detail with the appropriate behaviours.

Best of luck!
