Hello i am new here but have 2 boy guineas who do the usual fighty sort of thing. One is older of about 3 or more and the other is a baby of about 6 months maybe older. It is the young one revel who gets most stroppy, they seem fine as long as they dont jump into each others tray. Revel the youngest jumps into Rolos tray and tiks at him so rolo jumps out.
No one really gets hurt they just dont seem to be able to stay too close
I was just reading the sticky about boys and fighting and then read yours about having to seperate them and wanted to see what people thought about what happened this morning.
I thought they just tolerated one another but this morn i let Rolo the oldest out free range around the room and left Revel in his igloo.
Next thing i know Revel is stood up roaming his cage squeaking really loudly.
Pacing up and down he was, and i just suddenly thought he was looking for rolo and wanted to come out too.
What do you think? Does he maybe like his company after all?
He is not used to coming out free range so dont think he wanted to come play as is relatively new for him to come out, he goes in the garden on nice days etc but has not done too much house roaming like rolo..
:)
They eat together fine, i was also wondering if it will get better when Revel gets a bit older xx

Hi!

Welcome on here! Revel is at the stroppy age at the moment when the hormones take over and he wants to be macho pig; and yes, I think he wants to be with Rolo.

If you have the time, I would give it a try - he'll copy Rolo, so should learn faster. make sure you have them together on neutral ground at first.

Hello vicky and thanks, funnily enough i just sent you a pm as saw a post from you saying you would be having 5 pigs and think it said all boys so was keen to know how you do it lol
Arrrr i am really glad you think that he wants to be with rolo, it makes me sad when i hear them ticking at each other, i want them to be friends. he seems fine so long as no one enters his space sort of thing. he seems to have some personal space issues he he
Thanks again. karen

My boys have fallen out big time. It's fangs and more or less starting to draw blood. Not good. i think the brotherly bond has broken and it was my fault for thinking all my pigs would get on with each other.

Oh no, that is really hard isnt it. I had this idea that if they had an absolutely huge pen and loads of guineas would they just hang with the friends they liked and not fight if they had enough space. Mine are ok unless they have to pass each other too close. x Boys hey lol

Rolo, welcome to the forum!
I have separated your question from the previous thread it was posted on so you can your query answered separately :)

I would only separate your boys if they are actually fighting. They will often niggle at each other and have little spats, and often a few hours divided will sort them out for a bit! Once they are split up for a long amount of time, it's unlikley they will get back together easily, if at all (but not impossible).

About them not wanting to do much free-ranging - a couple of my pigs are the same, they are pretty lazy and when presented with run time often choose to spend it curled up in a corner! Although a couple of mine are getting on a bit so I guess they have just calmed down a bit, but guineas weill often not bother to take advantage of run time :)

Hello thanks for that.
Yes i have just found mine really need to be split but havent yet found a suitable cage that i can split. Rolo is roaming free in the living room and uses the rabbits tray and Revel is in the cage in the same room so can here them but not really see them that well.
xx

They were really tustling and bits of fur came out so seperated them, i think you are right about age as rolo is getting older and does like to laze, but revel just looks terrified and not really all that happy. Now he is on his own without rolo for today and yesterday he has come out of his house abit but still dont like to see him alone. I have started another thread to see if anyone can help if i get him neutered. See if anyone has a female for him or if anyone would want to take him as a boyfriend for their female.
Someone has said i could take one of their females but they are a bit far away so not sure how i would get her although i would very much like to.
So my next step is the neutering so ringing the vet to see what they offer on tuesday x

What a shame you had to separate, but when fur is found and/or blood is drawn you have definately done the right thing.

If you are looking for new friends for them and you are in Oxfordshire, I think Reading Guinea Pig Rescue rehome in your area and are one of the few rescues who will let you take your pig along to choose their own friends. http://www.guineapigwelfare.org.uk/reading-guinea-pig-rescue/ If you are looking at neutering, they will also be able to help you with an excellent guinea savvy vet who are experienced with cavies.

It's always worth checking out the local rescues first :) http://www.guineapigrehome.org.uk/gp/centres.asp will help you find more local to you if you decide to go down that route.

Best of luck.

Thanks Boureki that is really useful i will do that xx
yes i felt sad to seperate them but they have been trying to get along for a long time now and have tried many different cages all sorts so it sort of reached a peak xx

You're welcome :) It's always a shame when you have to admit defeat and separate, it sounds like you have done all you can to avoid the situation. Sometimes they just fall out for no reason apparent to us, it's all very sad and frustrating!

The vet RGPRescue uses is called Active Vetcare and there is a whole page dedicated to them on their website here: http://www.guineapigwelfare.org.uk/reading-guinea-pig-rescue/active-vetcare/ this may help you decide, but it still may be worth having a chat with Karen who runs the rescue regardless :)
