hi all... I know this is a very odd question and i wouldnt be asking if i hadnt checked it out for a while. Every month for the last 4 I have been recording when my boys "rumble strut" the most on my calendar. I only have boys, just the one pair. They live in my bedroom and are very nearly a year old. They are well bonded and havnt had a fighting/bulling issues, just occasionally rumble strut as boys do. I had inadvertantly noticed in the second month of recording (i thought the weather may be affecting them as it seemed to come in waves) There rumble strutting times exactly coincide with my periods! I thought this was a coincidence,so measured for a further two months. Its like clockwork!

So a few thoughts
Any one else experienced this?
What can i do to help it?

It isnt a real problem, but theres nowhere but my bedroom for them to go, so yeah.

Hi, have read online about an owner who's male cat would respond to her menstrual cycle by biting her neck! I guess animals are very sensitive to our pheremones/hormones! :))

I was a little surprised i have got to say. I mean i figure they must be able to smell the difference, but i dont see why it should affect them as I'm not a piggyyyy! mallethead

:))

No, but you are a girlie! And boys will be boys! He He He :(|)

This is true. I have to say since id noticed it ive been paying more attention to how human males treat me aswell, and my male friends give me more of a wide berth then too... :))

How interesting!

I know this can be common in horses - at a lot of big studs female grooms aren't often allowed anywhere near the Stallion yards when they're 'on' because the stallys pick up on it and it can cause quite obvious problems!

Strange to think its the same for tiny little piggies too!

How random. Interesting but also could be coinsidence too, as sows will come into season every 16 days or so, its just possible that its with every other season, every 30 days or so that they are rumbling. Ive never really noticed to be honest, i will have to keep my eyes open next time I'm on incase it is a hormonal thing. Interesting if it is.

x.

How interesting? I dont have periods anymore (due to the pill i am on) but i would have been interested to know if it effected my boar...

How amazing to have tuned in to such a finding! As you say they are in the bedroom with you which must add to the phenomenon, it's like you've carried out an exciting experiment- there must be something in it.
There seems to be no end to discovering more and more things about our piggies. Well done. :)p

Interesting stuff!

They're probably responding to your lady pheromones.

It's like when you go off to university and live with a load of girls for the first time, you'll often find that after a few months, your monthly cycles are in sync with each other. Again, it's due to pheromones and what not.

Haha, to abinurse, i very much doubt it is a coincidence as my periods over the last 4 months have been anything from 21 to 34 days appart (theyre a little messed up, lol) :)

I just wondered if i was the only one that had noticed a change in there boars. :)

My aunties dog (male, unlike mine) is also "aware" when us girls are on. He follows whoever is on round the house the whole time! :))

Can't comment here, all my boars are castrated and i have the contraceptive implant and no periods, but would be interesting to hear from others!

That's really interesting! I wonder if it's some sort of very subtle scent or pheromone that they pick up on? I only have sows, and I can definitely tell when they are in season, but it's their cycles and not mine!

Before we had Milo my dog castrated he used to follow me every where and scent mark (wee) every where i would go in the house and he was really aggressive outside with other dogs at the time of the month for me.

The vets and behaviourist thought it was probably where we are so close he saw me as his property

My boys still do this. Every time i have a period they go mad. It has escalated to, when i clean them out on my period they hump me. *rolls eyes*

Ooh er, now you mention it Dodge had been madly frisky since Sunday when I came on, jumping poor Cherry like noones business. He is neutered, don't worry I am not a secret backyard breeder

I find it bizzare, but as they seem well bonded, and have never fought i just leave them too it. (not with the humping me, that is discoraged :)) )

I made sure they always have a piggy sized teddy in the cage too.
