bounty

HI just wondered if anyone has a problem like mine. my guinea pig bounty had an ear infection that was quite nasty and the infection burst out the top of his head, this was last November. he has been on lots of antibiotics baytril ect his ear infection has gone but the infection is still in a hole in his head, this he now has septrin on a regular basis. the vet is great with him and has xrayed his head and tried his best to flush this infection out but is weary of him choking under anaesthetic. Now and again his head bursts again and a little pus comes out not a lot but it doesn't look nice i clean it s best i can and keep his head trimmed short so it clears quickly.
He seems a happy little sole who will lick you and sit happily for cuddles. the vet seems to think that he will always have to have septrin but after a few weeks bounty will not have it and i leave him for a few days and then start again.
I just wondered if anyone else had a problem like this?

no i have not heard of this, maybe maryh or someone could help you as i am sure long term antibiotics isn't good for a piggy, is bounty on a probiotic to protect his tummy from the septrin? he sounds like an adorable little fella. would love to see pictures of little bounty. sending hugs and healing vibes and hoping bounty gets better soon. O0
:smitten: :smitten: :smitten: get well soon little mate :-* :-* :-*

sounds like an abcess, these need to be kept open and flushed out, they don't need to be drained or removed under anesthetic. Any other details I can't help with as I have never experienced an abcess....hope someone else can help

just wondering how little bounty is? has he been to the vet? like i said PM maryh and talk to her, she and her vet are wonderful and they will help you and little bounty. O0
please keep us posted on bounty. sending hugs and healing vibes :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Yes sounds like repeated abcesses. Another member on here has a piggy who has had 5 one after the other. Your vet sounds like he knows what he is doing and apart from increasing the strength and duration of the antibiotic and back flushing it and keeping it open while it heals, I really dont know :-\

how is little bounty today? the memeber whose piggy has had 5 abscesses and is only 8 months old is annie59's ricky but now (touching wood) he is doing well O0 still sending hugs and healing vibes for you and bounty and hoping he gets better real soon :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

:)Bounty is due at vets later in the week, he is just the same. The hole is only tiny and it heals very quickly only to burst again. I will speak to vet about something for his tummy as he has lost a little weight. But as i said he is a happy little chap, he is back outside with his pal Gizmo as they were missing each other, I had Bounty inside for the winter. Will get some photo`s and post later in week. Many thanks for kind words for Bounty. :smitten: :smitten:

hoping all goes well at the vet O0 do you think gizmo may have bitten him? hoping all goes well perhaps ask the vet for septrin(sp) as a lot of UK people recomend it O0 hugs and healing vibes for bounty :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

It sounds like there is still an infection inside and the skin outside is healing over too quickly ... hence that is why it bursts open again.

I had this once on Stuart after bite wounds on his back from his brother. After it healed nicely the first time, then burst open badly again with pus everywhere :o then the second time on anti-biotics I had to keep the wound open by gently bathing it and removing the scab each day with warm boiled water. That did the trick.

Let us know how Bounty gets on as it must be horrible for him!

PS. Do you think this may have been from a bite?

:) No Bounty wasnt bitten he had an ear infection that was so bad the infection couldnt drain out and burst through his head. There is obviously a little pocket of the infection still there. I do bathe his head and try to keep it open but then it looks better and there is no pus, then 10 days or so later it bursts open again. As i said its only a tiny hole. I have to keep cutting the fur on his head to help keep it clean, he does look a rascal. I will post photos soon. I do worry about him, Bounty and Gizmo are my first encounter with guinea pigs and i do enjoy looking after them. ( they are the childrens piggies but well you still get attatched dont you?) Will keep you posted with his progress. :)
