Hi

I've bought 5kg bag of hay from amazon and whilst I could store it like that it's super compressed. Id like to get something to empty it into to air it a bit. Anyone done that? Suggestions on bin size or any other storage suggestion appreciated.

Thanks

I got a large plastic bin from the garden center with a locking lid.
I also have a big plastic storage tub (the type you put in the attic or under your bed) so I can keep some of the hay inside at room temperature (the bin is outside).
It's not a problem in Summer, but right now it is so cold that if I fill the hay trays directly from the outdoor bin it's a bit of a shock for the piggies!

I have a hay bale bag you can get on amazon made by spillers - it’s a large sack with a draw string top that will hold a complete bale of hay (it’s a remnant of when I had a horse!). I keep it in the garage then take a slice (or section) out at a time in an empty food bag to give the pigs, usually twice per day. A slice usually lasts a few days.

I find a pillowcase is good for hay. You'd obviously not fit THAT much in it, but you could use it to keep some handy and refill it as needed.

I stocked up with total of about 17kg of hay for my Finn and Lara, 7 bags of 2.55kg.
I get hay auto shipped to my house, and also buy from Petco and PetSmart stores when they go on sale.

Below you can see the 2.55kg Oxbow hay bags and I have 5 of them with 2 Kaytee Timothy hay currently, so total of 7 bags of hay.
They are all USA grown, which I like.

That's fab, I ended up buying a 90l black bin and popping it all in there. Just got it next to their cage at the min. Certainly easier than trying to get it out of the compressed bag the stuff came in 🙂

Never knew such a thing existed! Have just ordered 2 from Amazon. Save a lot of mess in my car and storage space in my garage.

Do you have a link to that by any chance?

I've seen you've got a solution, but just incase someone else pops along looking for other ideas. I use a pop up laundry bin, it matched my room decor and it's easy to just reach in and grab some hay

I buy bales from the farm. I use 2 pop up garden bags as I find this easier to store and pull the required amount of hay out.
You can get them cheaper than on amazon but just a link so you can see what they look like.

I have one of those but I needed something that sealed up and contained the whole bale as I have to transport them in my car and the OH is fed up of hoovering hay out of the car! I could do it but he says I don't do the job properly!

For in my car I brought 2 single duvet covers that perfectly fit a bale inside though it is a bit awkward to get it in. Saves a lot of hay getting into the car. Like the idea of these bale carriers though. Might save up and order some.

I just let my car get full of hay lol. I bought the car cheap off a farmer who used to carry lambs in the boot 🤔 can stay like a farmers car.
