Disclaimer I am 100% certain of their sexes, they go for regular vet check ups and ones been neutered!

So I have a trio of pigs. One 6 year old neutered male and his two 2 year old lady friends. Now Pablo rarely bothers them except for some dominant rumble strutting now and then. But recently I have seen both mounting HIM! First it was beatrice who’s usually feisty and will quite aggressively fend off his rumble strutting, so when I saw her chase and attempt to mount him I wasn’t shocked or confused, it’s her personality she’s always wanted to be top dog, but I did think it was slightly strange for a female guinea pig!

However about 5 minutes ago I saw my third guinea pig mouse, usually extremely shy, making nervous little noises and scarpering away at any sign of confrontation try to mount him and chase him! What is going on? This is totally TOTALLY out of character for her, most of the time she’ll avoid him when he walks past let alone chase him!

Sows experiencing a strong season will mount other sows and even boars in the hours before they are ready to mate. The strong pheromones can also trigger other sows close enough in their own cycle. if you have never witnessed a strong multi-sow season, it can be really, really mad...

You may find the videos in this guide here helpful: When Sows Experience A Strong Season (videos)

Yep that’s totally what it is gosh can’t believe i’ve never seen it before! XDTotally crazy! Thanks so much!

If you have never experienced the madness and sheer excess of emotion in a really strong season, it can really throw you! that is why I have stickied this guide at the top of the behaviour section. You are not the first one to be worried... ;)

Seasons this strong are generally not all that frequent; they are most common in newly bonded groups/pairs where they help to cement the bond, in teenage sows (usually at their strongest around 6 months) or in sows experiencing high hormones or hormone spike (in adult sows generally caused by growing ovarian cysts). Some sows will never have a strong season; more hormonal sows can have them more regularly.

@PigglePuggle has a sow who is/was completely bonkers when in season.
Yes mad Lady Piggle... she's calmed down a bit with age (she's about 2 years old now) but from her first noticeable season at 16 weeks old until she was about 14 months old she was crazy, leaping around doing ninja moves and attacking thin air, mounting and humping and fighting with all the other pigs, spraying pee in everyone's eyes... once she even seriously traumatised the neighbour's tomcat that luckily hasnt dared come back in the garden since!
All my girls are quite assertive anyway, and our submissive little husboar in the main cage gets mounted by the ladies far more often than he's allowed to mount them back, the ladies all spend much more time mounting each other and humping each other up and down the cage :)
