Hi all,

Hope you’re well.

Little Lily has a funky looking eye, from reading around in the forum I see it’s supposed to be quite common and harmless.

Could it ever turn into an issue? Is this something to keep in mind during our next vet visit, just in case?

Thank you!

PS! The white spots on the actual pupil are a reflection. The growth can be seen surrounding the iris.

Do mention it at the next visit; but there is nothing that can be done about it. It’s not painful so that is something!

Hi

Osseous metaplasia (eye tissue turning into bony tissue) in a ring around the eye is not at all uncommon in older guinea pigs. It is not painful and there is nothing that can be done about it; all it does is narrowing the field of sight a little. Links - Eye Conditions - Guinea Lynx Records

The ring form is more common than an isolated white spot in the eye (osseous choristoma), which should be ideally vet checked as cataracts or a starting ulcer from an eye puncture could be overlooked otherwise. they can all start as dots in the eye.

We have got the condition listed in our guide on Care for older guinea pigs, which includes a chapter on common age-related issues: Caring for Older Piggies and Facing the End - A practical and supportive information collection
