Hello, I’m both a new owner and a new user on this forum so I have tons of questions. My biggest thing right now is bonding my two boars; there has been some pretty excessive mounting, dominance behavior, and they’ve even had one big fight before. I was wondering if it would be best to separate, as luckily I have a c&c cage and was hoping to form it as a two story cage if they just aren’t getting along. What should I do?

Welcome to the forum

How old are they?

While dominance behaviour is totally normal, an actual fight is not.
An actual fight means they sadly don’t like each other and I’m sorry to say they must be immediately and permanently separated.
Things don’t get better after a big fight. They occur due to their inability to form a hierarchy and that won’t ever change.

As they need to be separated, they must be side by side. This means they cannot live in a two storey cage (if that is what you meant).
They must be side by side on a single level so they have 24/7 interaction between the bars.
If you made the cage two storey with one living on the bottom level and one living on the top level, then they lose all ability to interact and they would become very lonely.

Each piggy needs a minimum of a 3x2 c&c each (ideally a 4x2 each).

They’re young, about 6 months old. I’m assuming that since they’re the same age, they’ll probably continue to fight for dominance. They’ve only had one big fight so far, and they go through periods of mounting, which last the whole day. Thanks so much for the advice!

I have a small room, so that’s why I was wondering about stacking their cage vertically

Going through hormones at the same time does pose a bit more of a challenge for them, but ultimately a bond comes down to them having compatibility rather than having anything to do with age.

All it takes is one fight sadly - the moment it happens the relationship is over.

I can appreciate that it is an issue to find space for separate cages but unfortunately a stacked cage isn’t an option for separated piggies.

The only way they can live in a stacked cage is if each had their own new friend.
The issue with that comes that you need to be certain you get the correct friend to bond with each piggy otherwise you risk having up to four separated piggies.

So having them side by side would be the best option - I’m sure I can make the space for that! I really appreciate it! And they probably won’t bond? That sucks, but I can understand that it happens, I’m just hoping they can live peacefully side by side and I can tame them and bond them with myself haha <3

Welcome to the forum and the wonderful world of boars. I have a separated pair who interact through the bars.

Yes side by side is the best.

If they have had a fight then no, their bond is over.

One of my pairs broke down with fights and they live happily side by side.
One of them is now bonded with one of my other older boars as his cagemate passed away.

Hello again. A bit of a piggy update. One of my board ended up getting acute gut stasis. It was a bit scary, but luckily he’s recovered well! I had them separated for a while, however, they seemed very depressed without one another. My theory is that my piggy got sad being separated from the other boar and developed GI stasis from the stress. They’re now together and there are no more fights or anything concerning in terms of them interacting. I could be wrong, but was just putting a thought out there ☺️
