Hey guys. I got my guinea pig Lucky a new baby brother so he wouldn’t be lonely after my Peanut died. Lucky is 2 and Buddy (the new pig) is only a couple months old. I have to separate their cage with bars in between so Lucky won’t continue to be aggressively dominant with him.

How long did it take for your male guinea pigs to finally get used to each other and their smell?

Hi!

Did you conduct the introduction on neutral ground or just placed the baby into Lucky's cage - in which case he will be seen as an intruder?

Make sure that the baby has got a safe place with two exits on opposite sides that Lucky can't get into. Once you have started a boar bonding you cannot interrupt the bonding because when they meet again, they have to start right back at the beginning and do it all over again. Some boars can overreact when meeting a companion.

Please read the advice in our bonding guide. it has got special chapters on boar and on baby bonding as well as a chapter on the post-introduction dominance phase, which is lasting on average about 2 weeks.
Here is the link: Bonding and Interaction: Illustrated social behaviours and bonding dynamics

That’s great news. Hopefully they are compatible and things will continue to go smoothly.
Do read all the guides about boars in the behaviour section. Once the youngster hits his teens (at 4 months lasting until around 14 months) you are likely to see a lot of dominance during this time

What a little cutie!

Keep in mind that the post-intro dominance phase usually lasts for about 2 weeks. Only after the end of that is the bonding actually finished.

Here are our boar guides which you will hopefully find helpful in the coming weeks and months:
A Comprehensive Guide to Guinea Pig Boars
Boars: Teenage, Bullying, Fighting, Fall-outs And What Next?
Dominance Behaviours In Guinea Pigs

Whether two boars are compatible are not often decides only during teenage when baby boars leave 'school' and develop their adult identity, often accompanied by sudden strong hormone spikes.
Our boar and teenage guides both explain how the teenage phases run and what you can do to avoid the most common flashpoints for conflict in boars and what to do when things get really hairy during a spike.

Please take the time to read and bookmark them so you look them up again whenever needed. ;)
