Has anyone experience of bonding a partially sighted boar?
Any advice gratefully received.

Arthur and Harry now live side by side, and have done for about 5 months, as they fell out when Harry came into his teenage hormones. Bonded when Harry was 7w old, and seemed to get on ok.
Harry is now 10.5m old, and Arthur is at least 18m old (but probably not more than 2y old). Arthur is more dominant, and Harry is happy to be subservient, except he is so much bigger than A, than even when he puts his head down, it is higher than A's. (Harry 1.35 kg, and Arthur 1.06kg).

We've always had suspiscions that A's eyesight is not v good, but in the bright sunshine at the weekend, i could see that his Right pupil does not constrict in direct light, and pupil is more cloudy than left. no sign of trauma. Likely this a cataract.
they were happy in the run together for an hour or 2, then something happened again and we had a 'face off', and so the spare run came out.

Is it worth still trying to bond these 2 or are we going to be unable to overcome the issues of A being startled when H comes up on his blind side?
(we don't want to overstress them if it is potentially futile)

Many thanks
Becca

Hi Becca yes we do have a few people who have sighted or partially sighted piggies on here ..........i'm sure they'll help you :)

Wishing both Arthur and Harry all the best, the girls send some girlie kisses to brighten up there days they hope xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Thank you Glynis,
Iwill pass on the kisses when i get home (i'll do it quietly so the other boys don't hear!).

Hi i bonded chocco and marvin last year. Chocco appears to be partially sighted but the bonding went well (bonded in a large room, with lots of food and close supervision). Untill marvin reached the hormonal stage, blood was drawn, i think this may have been due to a misunderstanding by chocco due to not being able to se very well.

Both chocco and marvin were seperated for 6months. However my partner and I recently moved house. We put chocco and marvin in the run while trasporting their cage and left them in it overnight seperated ofc. However marvin broke through during the night, and now 4 weeks has gone by and they are living together happy.

My advise would just be to bond them as you would any other pigs but keep an extra eye on them during dominence displays to ensure that the partially sighted guinea is getting the correct messages.

It is nice to know your boys are getting on again.
Have you had any fighting at all, in the new house? Harry and arthur seem to get on for and hour or so, and then the fighting begins again.
Just noticed where you are. we're in carlisle, so if you want to pop round and wave your magic wand (and say hello) just pm me

If they are still fighting, I would just continue to let them live side by side - just for the sake of them not getting on well enough.

You do not need to take special precautions for partial sightedness, except being aware that a piggy usually does not like being surprised on its blind side and can react a bit irritable - especially when approached by Harry or you.

Hi
Sorry didnt reply sooner, as we just moved house internet has been a problem ><
If your boys are still fighting would **** just let them live side by side I made a candc cage for my boys and seemed to be fine as they could talk to each other through the mesh.

Since moving in havent had any problems at all with fighting other then the odd carrot or pepper snached from chocco by marvin. No rumble strutting or anything like what they used to be like when younger.

Think chocco does get a shock somtimes when marvin comes on his blind side but as he is so much smaller then marvin dont have issues with size like you do.

My Magoo has a malformed eye, wether he has any sight in it is debatable. He has lived with Murray since Murray was 6wks old, they do have the ocassional spat but it never escalates into more thankfully.

I have had a few pairs of boars who have had to be separated due to fighting; all perfectly sighted. In my experience rarely do they re-bond especially when they have inflicted wounds on each other :(

I personally would house Arthur & Harry separately but so both can see one another. One of my separated pairs would share a run together but other pairs wouldn't tolerate being within a foot of each other - they are all different :)
