Hi,
So I had 4 guinea pigs, 2 older boars (5years old) and 2 younger ones (2years old). The 2 younger ones have been seperated due to their behaviour with one another and I am currently waiting for my vets to be open again to get them neutered and put with a sow (I have been to the vet for advice about this). Unfortunately last week one of my older piggies passed away which left poor Peanut on his own. Now I wanted to try Peanut and Ralph (younger piggy) together to see how they get on because they're both really laid back. I put them in a neutral huge space etc with veggies in the middle, they were in the space for around an hour and there was just some normal behaviours such as humping, running after eachother etc. Now, ive repeated this with them 3 times and there has been no aggressive behaviour such as teeth chatting or fighting. Do you think it's safe for me to put them together in their cage?

If they are getting on well, then move them to their cage and don’t separate them again.

When you introduce boars it is done as a one time thing - it is then seen through to conclusion whether that be success or failure. You put them into a bonding pen for many hours in one sitting, if they get on ok, then they need to stay together from then on and move into the cage together, if it fails, then they are permanently separated. By introducing separating and then reintroducing you interrupt their processes so each time they have to start again at each meeting.

Hi

Here is our very detailed bonding guide that takes you through all stages of the over two weeks bonding process, from the run up to the end of the dominance phase.
Please note that you can't bond piggies, and especially boars, in short meetings; for piggies any play date is an aborted full-on bonding session where they have to start from scratch next time round - something that is very frustrating and rather counterproductive if you do this more than once. Once you have committed you need to ride the tiger to the bitter end, whether you stay on or fall off; as nerve-wracking as that is!

Here is our bonding and our boar guide; you will find both very helpful:
