cuddles

O.k I thought id ask before i do anything dumb.I am blessed with having the perfect boar 0:) My mr toadie is a abbissinian(sp) hes 18months old and had fathered babies before he came to the rescue. He gets to be big brother to all the baby boars and there are never ever any scuffles even though their house is within sight and smell of the females. Now I usually dont take in males but I have taken on a adult boar that is currently living with his two pregnant female friends and i want to seperate him incase he eats their babies.I have heaps of other cages but i hate it when one has nobody to snuggle and especially since he only got here today and is terrified of everything.should i leave him by himself, try him supervised inside with baby boys or try him inside supervised with mr toad?
Thanks

He might be best being tried first of all with the babies as they say that pairings work better with different ages. I think that's what I'd try at first and then try with Mr Toad - he seems a gentle chap so may take well to another adult boar. I have never had any problems pairing up boars and have even had a couple of larger groups live quite happily together. Just make sure they can each have their own space and it should be fine. Keeping fingers and paws crossed for you.

just thought i should say that the male you have in with the pregnant females depending on how far they are on. If they are far on in pregnancy a male will try and mate with them after they give birth as they come into heat after having a litter so i would advise you maybe move him if you can. It would be nice if Mr toad could become friends with this wee one. Just gradually introduce them and see how they get on.

Also as far as a male eating the babys i wouldn't worry although common among rabbits guinea pigs don't tend to eat the young.

I hope this is helpfull.

thanks thats why i thought i had better seperate him.I had him with the babies today and he was fine(no humping or fighting) and i think will let him meet toadie tomorrow. Thanks for the advice it has made me way less worried about trying to make them be friends

Yes, you do need to separate the boar that is in with the pregnant sows before they give birth as they can mate straightaway after the birth.

I also have never had any experience of either boars or sows eating their babies, but I can't make a comparison to rabbits as I don't anything about rabbits.

If Mr Toad is placid then perhaps you could try them together. But do be careful and my advice is to bath the boar who is already with the sows as their scent will be on him which could cause problems, i.e. a fight.
However you decide to mix and match your piggies, try to do it on neutral territory, don't put one into another's hutch straightaway. I have always popped them in a run with plenty of nice vegs and grass to munch on and watched very closely the reactions!
Let us know how you get on :)
