We currently have 1 boar who is a little over 4 yrs old who lives by himself (we got him when we didn't know any better about trying to keep them together in pairs :( ). We also have 2 girls in a separate cage but we keep their cage right next to his.

We were just offered a 1 year old male whose owner had passed away, we think we're going to accept the offer but I want to make sure we have our ducks in a row. We plan on keeping the boars separate for a month or so to make sure the new pigger isn't sick, introduce them somewhere safe, then move them to a larger new cage with 2 of everything and move the girls across the room. I know keeping the girls cage close will likely cause problems but I don't know how far away I should move them.

The 4 year old is laid back, and when introduced to a friends boar of similar age and size there weren't any immediate problems but I don't know what the 1 year old's personality is like. I think we have everything ready and if they don't get along we have floor space for 3 large cages but I want to do this correctly.

Any advice is appreciated :).

You could try the new boar with your older boar if that doesn't work he could be neutered and paired with your girls so there is other options available.

The key to any successful bond is character compatibility and not age - if the boys are both two dominant or don't like each other, then it doesn't matter whether they are babies, adults, same age or a large age difference. I know of successful boar bonds with that kind of age difference or even more.

If your new boy is not getting on with the older boar, he is at least at a good age for neutering to live with your two sows after a 6 weeks safety post-op wait. It is however crucial that you find a good vet for the operation in order to cut down on the potential risk of complications. If you please added your country, state/province or UK county, we may be able to help you on that score.
