I have written another question in the General Section, but I think this one is suitable here! ;D
If you read my question in the other section it will tell you that I am hoping to be getting guinea pigs for my birthday but I am a little confused.
I have read that sows are more active and boars are more cuddly. But then I also read that boars are hormonal but sows get moody when in heat. I am a little confused as to what sex I should get :-\
I'm quite worried about getting bitten and want a pet that my parents dont think is "yucky or vermin" and reckoned guineas would be a good idea so help abotu choosing which sex would help lots!
x

Sows are hormonal, when they're young they get stroppy with eachother when in heat which only lasts a day or two. boars dont get hormonal, they just get nasty lol! boars are more likely to fall out, if they fall out chances are they wont go back together. sows get a bit snappy but dont usually fall out and if they do they can be put back together quite often. sows in my experience are more active then boars running around the cage etc! boars are better for cuddling, they dont seem to mind being handled as much. my sows are more vocal aswell! saying that all pigs are different! the other thing is that if you get two sows then decide you'd like another you can usually add more sows to a herd, with boars its rare to get three that get along :) x

Hey how about one of each. A neuted boar and a sow will normally get on.javascript:void(0);

Its just my friend has guineas and she is breeding them near my birthday and I was hoping to get one. She let me hold one of her males, he is quite young but is so calm and sweet, it made me want a guinea pig even more! :smitten:
But if I get them from her then they wont be neutred etc. :-\
Aahh! x

There are thousands of pigs in rescues that need homes and you may find a neutered boar to go with a sow. :)

I think my girls are more cuddly than my boys haha but that may be cos they stroppy teenagers, my girls wheek alot more!
Can i suggest that you tell your friend to please not breed from her pigs, I'm not being mean but there are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many piggys looking for forever homes that its not a good idea to breed.
this is a pro rescue forum and we do not discuss breeding as we want the pigs already here to get homes first O0
Take a look at the recue section here and see if you dont fall in :smitten:

i for some reason have always preferred little girls, they just seem more affectionate than males. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and girls do seem to get on better together than boys. we had a male and he would nip alot, though we did love him :smitten: 0:) 0:) 0:) :smitten: :smitten: like already said, it does depend on the piggy too. hoping you get your piggy/ies soon and enjoy the love piggies can give and to the joy of owning piggies. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: hugs and cuddles from me and the girls in oz. :-* :-* :-* :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

how about either a couple of sows or a neutered boar and sow (as has been said) obv a neutered boar would be older than 6 months and would have to be from a rescue.

i think a boar/sow pairing would be great, lots of rescues are in need of a home :)

ive only had sows, which i love to bits, but i would love a boar too :smitten:

We have all boars - we will always have them as in our view they are affectionate, chunky and real characters! But also boars are often much harder to rehome so that just seals the bargain for us! They can be prone to falling out, but so can girls, although I understand girls bonds are deeper or more lasting.

Edited to add - please consider adoption, there are so many unwanted pigs in rescue through no fault of their own :)

I have had boys and girls and a neutered boar with a sow/s & both boys & girls have had their moments. The pairing with the least amount of tiffs (in my experience) is a neutered boy with a girl or girls :)

I just think it's personal choice and which piggie(s) you fall in love with (or I should actually say whcih piggie(s) fall in love with you!).

In my experience boars are friendlier and more affectionate than sows and sows tend to be more inquisitive and adventurous - although this can make them accident prone!

I'm totally in love with boars at the moment!

Good luck with whatever you choose O0

Ive over 40 guinea pigs and all are so different. ive sows that wont go in with other girls and loads of girls that without the neutered boar would drive me mad, and boys that are so adorable. and boars that should have warnings on their cages . I handle mine every day. it's difficult. arnt Piggies great but I do look on google for scanipoospiggies .

I've got both sows & boars & everyone's personality is different I've a very stroppy sow that doesnt like company , & 2 pairs of boars that get on very well , better than the sows at times . The sows are definately alot more vocal .
I think just go with the guinea you like the best & you'll not go far wrong.
