So I have never seen anything like this before.....Charlie has started to mount alfie and chasing him around (I havent seen him do this before) and its a little strange charlie chases alfie does a little bum sniffing and a small mount (in which alfie is squeeking very loudly) then charlie runs in the hidey and lies flat down for a minute and get backs up and repeats again and again it has been going on now for the last hour or so rolleyes.... I know there is threads about this but I thought I would mention the laying down part as dont recall seeing it in a thread? do I just leave them to it or take alfie out for abit I just havent seen either of them run so much wondering how much they will do this before being tired out? alfie seems to be getting louder aswell would this be cause for concern? pow-pow how do I know when alfie is getting annoyed/stressed
Thanks

what I forgot to mention is that charlie is 3 times bigger than alfie so i am afraid that he will hurt alfie by being on his back :(

Hey all so havent seen this for a while then tonight it started again and alfie seems distressed :( do I separate them oh I am sooo worried about the liitle one :(

i'm sure one of the experts will be here soon...

how long have they been together for?

I wouldnt separate unless blood has been drawn? perhaps its just a dominance thing between charlie and alfie?

but i'm sure one of the experts will comment soon. hows it now?

awww :( I'm no expert but id say its ok, are they new friends or young boys? i believe thats normal for buys and if the one lying down is the older one i wouldnt worry we have just got a new little girl for our 5 year old and she was doing the same or she would just lay down mid chase... basically she is old and cant keep up! then when she has had a bit of rest its back to trying to keep up with the young uns :D

they have been together for about 7/8 weeks Charlie is 2 and Alfie is 3 and half month old this is the only problem I have had with the lads.......charlie is having a rest and going in again but Alfie is squeeking very load :(

Hey,

I have two boars who've been living together for 7wks - when i first paired them my eldest guinea pig who was 6 months old was mounting our new piggie who was just 6wks old literally every 10mins. I know it's difficult to watch/hear but the advice i was given was to observe closely and monitor the situation, but don't step in or interfere unless blood has been drawn.

Mounting is just part of the dominance game and from what ive read, some boars can continue this ritual throughout their lives. In fact my eldest boar continued his for about 4 days then gave up for a day or two then started again. I hadn't seen him doing again until 2 days ago when he did it again (thankfully he only did it twice).

While my younger boar appears stressed by the whole thing as soon as the mounting stopped he would follow my eldest piggie everywhere (and still does). What i do is monitor the health of both piggies by regular weighing and ensure by observation that the youngest piggie isn't being restricted by the eldest. Ive also made sure they have plenty of space by building them a C&C and have 2-3 of everything. I also follow the dominance pattern by feeding and petting the more dominant piggie first.

I hope this info helps a little - but as this is such a great forum, i'm sure some more experienced piggie owners will offer some more advice.

Good luck :)

Thank you.....Sodapops that sounds like my lads aswell.... alfie still follows charlie everywhere my other half said the same that if the littlen was in pain or that stressed he would stay away from charlie....I just dont like hearing my little fella squeek like that but I totally understand I will keep a close eye on them
Thank you again :)

The hormones have woken up in your boys and they have entered the stroppy "puberty" months.

I agree that having everthing in twos and as much space as possible may help them making it through.

Please do not separate until there are bloody fights with bites.

Here is a link to boar behaviour which can help you reading the signs.

Thank you Wiebke
I do have a c&c cage which is huge and 2 of everything well hopefully its just a phase :))
I really dont want to separate the boys they have been great untill this so I will keep a close eye on them
thanks again :))

The stroppy time can last from 3-12 months; that is when their male hormones wake up (but unevenly) and the testicles descend. When every boar has to prove that he is the most macho boy the world has ever seen...

In the end, it all depends on how well they mesh as characters; you can do only so much, and by the sound of it, you are doing it already.
