I know there are numerous threads regarding cage size but I'm a bit confused. It says 2x4 for 2 guinea pigs (unsure of whether this is for boars too).

I have a 2x4.5 grid c&c as this is all that will fit. The half a grid is made from the last two grids overlapping. Does this mean it's too small for two boars?

Forgot to add that with the cage size guide saying 2x5 is recommended for 2 boars I wasn't sure whether it meant 2x4.5 would be too small

@Wiebke I've looked at that thread but don't understand it. It says 2x4 recommended for 2 guinea pigs but I don't know whether that's boys too or just the girls

2x4 ft is the MINIMUM space recommendation by the RSPCA for two guinea pigs of any gender, and you can rehome boars from a rescue with a cage of this size.

However, we strongly recommend more space for especially boar pairs, and so do rescues. With boars, cage size can really matter! Especially with sub-adult boars, to give them a chance to get away from each other.

2x4.5 will be OK for 2 boys if they get along well. Personally I wouldn't put baby boys or adolescent boys in it just because they can be such drama queens! However if you are getting 1 year plus boys who are we bonded they would most likely be fine.

That being said my boar pairs get on beautifully compared to my stroppy sows!

The biger the cage the more of a sence of freedom they will feel

I have two boys that are currently on their own but side by side in two 2x4.5 cages but I am looking to bond them with another boar each. I could possibly make their cage 2.5x4.5 if that would make much more of a difference?

Haha sorry but I don't understand the square foot measurements. I've tried but it just baffles my head. So are you saying I should extend to 2.5x4.5 each cage or will it not make a difference?

I didn't quite manage to extend each cage width by half a grid, I was only able to extend it by a quarter of a grid.

The cages now measure 162x79cm each. Is this much smaller than a 2x5 cage? As I am looking to date my two single boys I obviously want them to have enough space and minimise the risks of fallouts in the futureimage.webp

It will be as your cages are over 5 ft long and 2 ft deep. What you have to remember is the minimum cage size of 4x2 isn't actually c&c panels it is feet and inches. The RSPCA came up with then minimum standard years before c&cs were popular. The only thing I would say is if your boys successfully date, find a way of blocking their view of the boy next door as this could upset them whilst settling.

To be honest, I would consider making it permanent unless they are very relaxed. The animal rescue where I work have the piggies in large pens on the floor with solid divides between them. How ever some piggies will still walk up and down purring and digging at them because they can smell their neighbours.

Okay thanks. I'll have a think of what I could use for along the middle to block their view. Or maybe even cut the correx in half and separate the cages to opposite sides of the room when the new piggies come? If their cages weren't so close would I still be best to block their view?
