I just changed my pigs' kitchen area and one of my boys apparently had pee with some blood. One boy appears healthy. The other is being treated with baytril for a suspected respiratory issue. I don't see any other bloody spots right now. Not sure who did this. Everyone seems "fine" and I don't hear any cries of pain when they potty. How soon should we go to the vet?

I would watch them to try and see if any of them are squeaking when toileting. There is no harm in getting them seen even if it does end up being a one off.

To add on...I was inspecting the area more and found this red chunk near the area. I thought it was a blood drop but it is more like a blood clot. Neither boy has any blood on them. Guess we'll be going to the vet asap.

No one has cried all day, but I'm narrowed down which pig I think it is. I found this while cleaning their poops up tonight. Our regular vet is full so I'll be calling as many exotic vets as I can tomorrow and if that doesn't work we're going to the ER.

Do you take them out of the cage? You can do your usual lap time and put light coloured blanket underneath and wait until they pee. I had to take few urine samples and usually give cucumber (as long as they're used to having cucumbers) and wait. Longest I had to wait was one hour, tho. But it's worth it as it'll only get worse and he'll need vet sooner than later. Having urine sample is great start for the vet, too. But one step at the time, first find out who it is.
I appreciate it's difficult with vets atm...

I got them from an animal shelter and their past owners must not have handled them well, so they don't do floor time. It is 6.30am here and the vets I want to call open at 7am. I did find an emergency vet that sees pigs that I can go to. One blatantly states not to bring exotics if it is after normal hours of the exotics hospital they work with! The other I have been to with a kitty but don't feel confident going back to. But something has to be done.

The vet got urine from the suspected pig and claimed his pink urine was normal. I had them test it and it was positive for blood. Asked them to do an ultrasound which I am waiting on and will pick him up in an hour

Well done on pushing for more. Are they experienced in treating vets?

From what I saw online the vet has a lot of rabbit and bird patients and accepts guinea pigs. I THOUGHT it would be fine but apparently not...I won't go back. The vet was VERY pushy on selling whatever brand of hay and pellets he had and claimed Oxbow was bad. I figured it couldn't hurt to buy some of their hay as it was so cheap and I got quite a bit. Turns out it is bermuda hay and the pigs don't seem terribly fond of it.

They did show me his ultrasound and there were no stones in his bladder or kidneys.

Next time I'll just go to the exotics ER and pay more.

It’s good that he doesn’t have bladder stones but he will need antibiotics and a painkiller for a possible uti. I’m sorry that you’ve had a bad experience with that vet though

I have some pain meds for them from their December visit and we got more enrofloxacin for the UTI boy.

Is that what the vet prescribed? Hopefully it will do the trick

Yes that is what we got from the vet. I noticed Amigo was not as excited about getting veggies tonight. He nibbled it a bit and had hay and now he is asleep with pepper in front of his head. I don't want to deal with the vet we went to. The weather is going to be dangerous here in a day or two (driving is not advised) so our options are not much.

He is taking enrofloxacin twice a day. I have probiotics. I have Emeraid critical care as well. He hasn't had the latter yet.

Should I stop the enrofloxacin before it destroys his tummy? Do I keep him on it and give the critical care?

He does get scared when it is medication time and starts shaking when I hold him...he has to be picked up for meds and it terrifies him, so I understand being too nervous not to eat. However once he is back in his cage with his brother he gets back to normal.

Keep giving the probiotic either two hours before or two hours after the antibiotic. Don’t stop the antibiotic unless the vet has said so.

You don’t stop an antibiotic unless there is a medical need to (a proper reaction to it)
It’s common for baytril (or any antibiotic) to upset their appetite but it’s not a reason to stop giving it. The probiotics can help and you will need to syringe feed if he does lose his appetite. Make sure you keep weighing him daily so you can monitor his food intake

Keep on giving him the antibiotic and probiotics unless a vet tells you to stop

I may have panicked too soon. I gave him his Oxbow vitamin c cookie to see if he'd accepted, and he happily ate it. This morning he ate celery and hay. It's strange that he completely rejected the green pepper. I'm just glad he's eating somewhat normally.
