We have 2 boars, they are brothers and around 8 months old - they have the occasional squabble, but nothing too serious.

This morning, we noticed that the bigger of the 2 (Fudge) was mounting Skunk and trying to have his way with him - this definitely wasn't happening up to when we went to bed last night, they're in the living room and we would have noticed as I sit right by their cage and talk/play with them in the evenings.

Fudge was sort of nipping skunk in his side, then trying to mount him. I think Skunk was scared at first as he was trying to run away from him, then just being still in the corner. He's usually very cheeky so not usual behaviour for him. Then it turned to everytime Fudge came close, Skunk would try to warn him off and chase him around the cage. Followed by some chattering from both.

Is there anything I can do about it? Will it get better or worse?

Hi

Our two boys were like this when they were younger, it was always Maurice (brown and white piggy in my avatar) that was trying to mount Julien. Jules got to the stage where he was warn him off and Maurice I think grew out of it :)

Though sometime, I think if Maurice is nervous, he tries to mount Jules even now and they will be 4 at the end of the month. No harm ever comes to our two there have been the occasional nick marks out of Jules ears where I am sure maurice has had a {:| nibble

Hope this helps

What you have experienced is typical boar behaviour when the testosterone hits. The peak of the big hormones is between 4-15 months until they stop growing and are fully adult. After, things usually quieten down again.

There is a very good sticky thread about boar behaviour at the top of the behaviour section that you might find very useful.

Thanks both :)

It's good to know that it won't be continous. I put some more toys in their cage whilst I'm in work so they won't get bored, and I'm going to let them have a long run around the living room tonight to try and get them tired!

Fudge is the laziest piggy ever, so I'm surprised he even has the energy! I'll have a read of that thread now :)
