I now have a loan boar after having to separate a pair because of fighting, trying to figure out best solutions so all my babies are happy. This might sound silly and tell me if so, I'm wondering if I can/should have my lone boar next to my girls so they can still interact through the bars at least, (c&c) or would this just be torture for him, like teasing him with something he can't have. Might get him neutered but worried about the op, well my husband is more than me as it's his favourite guinea pig and doesn't want to risk it.
Has anyone else had theirs side by side either temporary or permanently and what was the result?
Thanks

Hi there. Yea you can have a lone boar housed next to your sows. Just make sure that there’s no way he can escape and get in with the sows. There is always a risk with operations but this can be decreased by an experienced vet. You can also have post-surgery complications but they’re not a given. So find a vet you trust who’s experienced with guides pigs. You can ask them how many they have done etc.

A lot of piggies on here have been neutered and recovered well.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I'll link a guide you may find interesting. You can have a single boar next to sows but not a pair of boars. The sows would cause a pair of boars to fall out. In the green bar at the top of the page is a section called Guinea Pig Guides, click on there and you will find lots of interesting information.

Personally I would have him neutered and give him a wonderful life as a husboar. I wouldn't want the constant worry of keeping them apart securely. When my Merry arrived and lived in a cage next to my girls for a week his banging and bar biting drove me crazy. I couldn't have coped with it long term. But then he might have settled in time. I just know that once he was with them he calmed immediately.

Hi

A single boar can live next to sows as long as you make sure that he cannot climb, jump, wiggle through or crawl out. Don't have any houses he can use as launch pad by the divider and cable tie the grids in pen if you are using C&C.

Neutering by an experienced vet has a very good recovery rate. If you are very worried but don't mind travelling, then the Cat&Rabbit in Northampton are the best place for the snip; they have as close to a 100% success rate as can be. Make sure that your boy is not overweight, though. That is one of the biggest fatality risks in in neutering (or other) ops and the one out of a vet's control.

PS: I currently have 9 'husboars' but have had a succession of them; two of which are living with a pair of sows.
Here is more information about mixed pairs, which also very much applies to pairing a boar with bonded sows
