I have a trio of boars living together all getting on fine, they are about
5 months old and one is more dominant than the other two showing all the dominance behaviour rumbling, swaying his bum ect.
But he will keep chewing the others fur, they are all longhaired
2 peruvians and an alpaca the alpaca is the one chewing the other 2 he will shear a layer off at a time all over.
Dose anyone know why he is doing this, is he trying to suckle or is this a dominance thing?
Any ideas on how to make him stop?
i have resorted to rubbing some vicks vapour rub into there fur to try and make him stop - seems to be working for now but i don't want to harm them?

I have a texel who barbers my peru but not the others! I dont try and stop her as I dont mind but I wish she would do it evenly :))

No one seems to know why they do it. It may be a dominance thing but my Daisy is bottom ranked of the sows :{ some think it is them increasing their fibre/roughage but in any case, I don't think it matters x) They actually DO eat the fur too!

Hello. I also have a barber, Columbine, but she is restricted to eating the long tufts behind the ears of Carmina as the other two are short haired. As Carmina has been next to the rest but not with them for a couple of weeks after spaying (there's wire in the way) the tufts are now visibly growing back! Once Carmina goes back in there Columbine will eat them away again.

I have no idea why. Carmina is the dominant piggie. The eaten hair doesn't do Columbine any harm at all. It is just another odd habit!

Twinkle barbers Milo, Milo is a coronet and he is so good at it and is even! The Demon barber of Fleet Street I call him as he is a mad boy haha.

Twinkle is dominant. :)

UPDATE :- He has now taken to chewing his own fur on his sides it can't be bordom as he has lots of toys to play with aswell as having his cage mates, plenty of food and hay - why is he doing this?

Guineas only tend to do this to themselves if the skin is irritated. Where abouts is he doing it? I would treat for mites as a precaution (ivermectin) and see if it improves. Another possibility is fungal infection.

I can remember when one of our boars decided to try a bit of barbering on my wife. She was sitting there minding her own business when, snip, he had a couple of inches of her hair in his mouth. Came as a bit of a surprise - he never did it to any of his cage mates but he did try it a couple of times on humans after that.
