So I have a confession... I adopted Bru, my first male piggy, a while ago. And I knew about boar cleaning but I kept putting it off, hoping to wait for him to settle in before doing anything possibly scary (particularly as I wasn't confident), I was under the impression it was only a month or so overdue but last week I got a notification that it was his gotcha day  I feel absolutely awful for leaving it so long and need some advice. How should I go about this? Are their consequences for leaving him so long? The last thing I want is for him to be in pain :(

Usually with boar bits its much better to leave well alone unless there is a problem! If a boar seems in any discomfort down there, you can check if there is a bit of hay or fur stuck, but if you arent sure and he seems happy then a quick look that nothing looks sore or uncomfortable once a week is fine. If he did ever seem in any discomfort, asking a vet nurse to do the honours is best if you arent experienced- boars often have penis spines which are a perfectly normal thing for a virile piggy chap to have, and these could get damaged by unnecessary prodding and cleaning!

Ah thank you! I've read before that they need a monthly clean or it builds up and is quite uncomfortable but I wasn't too sure. He doesn't seem uncomfortable; he's still quite a young pig so maybe I got away with it 😩 I'll have a look during laptime tonight to be safe

Older boars or lazy boars may need some cleaning help, but neither of mine get regular cleans- I just look at the exterior once a week to see that everything looks normal! Occasionally Theo gets a piece of hay stuck up his bum sack while scent marking that we gently pull out if he is walking funny, and once when he first met long haired lady Blodwen we had to ask the vet nurse to remove some tangled long fur strands that had got wrapped round a delicate area... but otherwise I have never had to intervene!

I see. Thank you for the advice, I'll be sure to keep an eye on him

The rate at which boars need checks can vary enormously. Some are really messy or suffer from a quick build-up of smegma or excess semen fluid (generally teenagers are most prone to semen rods) while others rarely need any maintenance all their lives. If you feel any lumps or any swellings or really strong pongs in that area (including the penis shaft area) then you have a problem; otherwise you most likely won't.
