image.webp image.webp Hi, Ive recently adopted a 4 year old boar (Syd) from a friend after having only had girls before. I didn't know you had to do routine cleaning of their 'boy bits' and my friend said she'd never heard of it either. I came across the info on this forum, so last night was the first time he'd ever been cleaned. I did seem to get quite a bit of dirt out of his sac with cotton buds and liquid paraffin, but I couldn't manage to do his penis as he wasn't happy and was far too wriggly. He's never had any problems before, so is this absolutely necessary? I've taken a photo of his bits and noticed his penis seems to 'hang out' a bit. Is this normal or should I be concerned? He appears to be perfectly happy and not in any discomfort. As I say, I've never had a boar before so any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Have you seen this thread ?

Boar Care: Bits, Bums & Baths

To answer your questions in reverse order - your boar's penis looks perfectly normal.

I would only ever clean out a boar's sac if he was having problems with impaction.

Thanks PiggyOwner, yes, I've seen that thread and like many others it advises cleaning monthly. I just wondered if everyone is of that opinion or will he be ok if I don't do it as he's been fine up to now. It's just he really wasn't happy and seemed to sulk afterwards.

Thanks, I was hoping someone would say that as that's what I was thinking and in the wild it wouldn't get done! I know it's controversial but I've never bathed my guinea girls (Ebony and Ruby) or my border collie dog (Millie) either, they don't smell or get really messy so I don't see the need. Animals clean themselves and I think it's a human fixation with bathing .
