Hello
As you know, my guinea pig Alfie passed away yesterday. and, even though I feel rather guilty about it, I've bought another guinea pig.

I went to p@h to pick up some of Archie's favorite treats to cheer him up a bit (because he is just curled up in the corner and doesn't want to do anything). After I bought the treats I decided to look around, as I usually do. I went to the guinea pig enclosure just to look around. There were some lovely ones there, some cream and white ones, a black and white. All smooth coated lovelies. But then I saw the one I bought. A gorgeous semi long hair tortoiseshell. I was convinced it would be a female as that would just be my luck but when we asked it was in fact a boar (I have checked him, and yes he is! :)) )

I've never bonded two boars before and was wondering what is the best way to go about it. Should I bathe them? Together? Anything in the water, like some mild shampoo?

Archie has a very docile personality and is rather laid back. Felix (my new little guy) is very curious and is always purring, but is also super friendly (more so that Alfie and Archie when I first bought them)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated ^^

How old is the new baby? I would introduce them on neutral territory (out in the run on the grass if possible, or indoors with lots of tasty veg if not, to take their mind off it!). Supervise them, read the 'Boar behaviour' thread at the top of this bit of the board to see what's 'normal'. Expect chasing, purring, humping....

Have something to hand in case it turns nasty e.g a dustpan, don't put your hands in if they start a fight as you could get badly bitten.

I would normally put a petshop piggy straight in with one of my own pigs, it would be better to quarantine first just in case, but if your piggy is lonely then it's up to you.

Good luck!

Sophie

Thank you! ^^

The new baby is about six weeks old.
He did have a check over before I bought him. I'm prepared for all the dominance behavior, I just want to make sure it all wet smoothly. Already I've found Felix has quite a funny personality, it would be a shame to have to take him back :))

Just as Sophie has said really. Also, make sure they have 2 of everything including water bottles and food bowls. Good luck with it all. I hope it all turns out well for the 3 of you which I'm sure it will :) xx

Thank you for the help ^^

I just put Archie and Felix out on the grass.

I think it was a success! There was quite a lot of bum sniffing, no mounting, no teeth chattering, no rumble strutting.
Archie showed a lot of interest in Felix. He was sniffling him like crazy and burying his nose right into Felix's fur.

He really seemed to perk up when he saw Felix and he even had a bit to eat :<>

Have you checked out the sticky that Julie wrote at the top of this section? It will just help you confirm what is normal, and what isn't.

Good luck - an post a pic of the new boy soon, if you haven't already! :(|)

Yup, I've read it and re-read it ^^

And I have some pictures over in the photo's section :D
